Black Rain Falling by
Jacob Ross My rating:
3 of 5 stars A book I bought a while ago based on a recommendation, and finally got around to reading.
The book's central character and narrator, Michael "Digger" Digson, gets involved in a scandal near the beginning when his partner shoots a suspect, and is threatened with suspension despite the fact that it was clear that she was shooting to stop him from killing Digger.
At first, I thought this was what the whole book would be about, but it then introduced two murders (one took me by surprise because the character who got bumped off seemed like they would play a larger role in the book), which seemed to be connected to a large drugs operation, setting off a hunt for the mysterious "Shadowman".
This is a novel I wanted to like more than I did, because it did manage to throw in a lot of plot twists that I didn't expect, but it wasn't the easiest of books to read. The novel is set on a Caribbean island, and is written entirely in Digger's voice, so entirely in patois, so at times I was having to re-read several pages in case I'd missed something. Some of the chapters had several pages of conversations between the characters, making it a bit more of difficult book, and I thought the ending could have been a bit better.
