Get your feet wet--go for your CNA(certified nursing assistant) and try that out for size. The class itself is short and most technical colleges offer it. Just a suggestion so you can see what it's really like.

And, put it this way, my cousin Dawn just graduated with her 2-year RN in May and got hired at St. Mary's in Duluth as a graduate nurse. She's making $27.40/hour and she hasn't even taken the state boards yet! I've worked holidays, weekends and odd-hour shifts my entire employment life. At least if I was nursing, the $$ would kind of make up for lack of social life. Plus, I'm thinking of getting my LPN and being a clinic nurse - not as much responsibility and better schedules. ;)
