Busted

My cement shoes are custom built
I cross the street and get stares
I wave as I take my long walk
Tracks a foot in each direction
Now if this road only went home

My squid brother tried to hold her hand
The kids of course jeered and made news
She was not sure of her feelings, leaving him to sun
He came home full of wonder, mother had tea ready
That night he could be heard replaying under his sheets
I never once brought it up, his over the shoulder gaze was enough

An ambulance parade brought the whole town

With a breath and a pill she fondly remembers

Mixed up across the sky, the night holds on for dear life

If it was a promise I hope to remember

Did the dirt under her feet go away?

A single line under your eye makes all the difference

Hope raged through the fair
The clown at the back saw it coming
We all held tickets but they lost their meaning
The concessions took flight and we drank it up
His hands held to the gearworks like a vice
The approaching wave made hair stand on end
The wet baby let it pass and instead looked up
Cousins and nephews popped cap pistols in air
If anyone hit the ground, it was taken as inspired
The lamp on the highest tree let it off a bit easier
No contours in sights, the flattening felt right
A hush, now a rush, then a rhythme
The morning paper flew true
Every breakfast was delicious
Each tooth got brushed
No neighbor ungreeted
Each forehead, a kiss

words on a string
