And there you were

My hair got out the way
If only fall came sooner
There's space up ahead
I can see all the way down
There was once a path here
Taking it one step now the next
Hope and resurrection are forgotten
That old house was once my mothers
The porch fell apart when the footfalls stopped
I understand a bit about the history of our coming
I came to recognize your part in all of this and walked away
Taking the field below for granted I forget the blood and sweat
I begin to dig and leave a fingernail for the future to judge and dream about
There was a point when all froze and the snow stopped at eye level
Like upside down stars looking back at me the still sheet stared
Who are you to ask me where that came from, who am I to guess
I can't help but make this all about me, the words fall empty
The moment passes and this land is made white, whole
Our evidence is left behind, the passing of rabbits
Overheard, our conversation drifts like a gust
An answer seems to hide behind your eyes
I see what you see and you follow
The pattern begins to form
Now the dream ends

words on a string
