So the new Knight Rider series finally premiered. I was only modestly disappointed by the TV movie back in February, but I considered it a pilot, or a rough draft. I also went to a panel discussion at Comic-Con this year and (save for the HIDEOUS cobra logo they are using) was excited by what they showed and what they discussed they were planning. However, this first ep was, well, kinda boring!

One of my primary gripes about the TV movie was that there was not enough car action. All of the car scenes for the most part were done from unfavorable angles, and from inside the car. Though they added a bit more external wide shots, they also added ridiculous close-ups which only take you out of the action. All I want is for Val KITT to jump through a train car and to be able to see it and think it is awesome. Is that too much to ask?

Also, new KITT is part Gadgetmobile, and can transform into other cars. I think this is pretty lame. I accepted it in the movie because it was primarily used for camouflage. But now they are using it to pimp out the rest of the Ford line. Today, KITT turned into a truck because there was no time to stop for New-Michael and girl to get in! Actiontime required KITT turn into a truck so they could hop into the flatbed! Yeah it was pretty lame.

I can accept the ridiculous scope the show is trying to encompass, with conspiracy upon conspiracy surrounding this ultrahigh-tech secret organization, and the mystery of New-Michael's past (he has Secret Wars Amnesia!)
I even forgive KITT's dashboard interface being HAL from 2001. But what I really need is for the showmakers to step back and take stock about what this show is about. A supercar that solves crimes by going fast, jumping through things, and causing things to explode.

Seriously, new Knight Rider. I want to like you. But right now, I don't see you making it to episode 5, let alone season 2. If ever the world needed Hasslehoff, the moment is now.

EDIT: The new theme song remix is pretty cool. It was however, probably the most exciting part of the show.
