My current combat merits are 8 sword, 8 axe and 4 h2h. Sword merits were mainly for WAR/NIN man/joy setup, and while I enjoy that setup alot, I am in fact sacrificing other weapons. For example I use GA and Polearm quite a bit on WAR and DRG, and once my NIN is done I desperately need katana merits should I have any hope of ever pulling off a meat build half decently. Also, I kind of feel like capping h2h merits as I'm not quite happy with my acc and I more or less outright refuse sushi on MNK. Either way, I'm gonna present my thoughts per job:
WAR
Axe: I don't like using gaxe when /nin so I am reluctant to lowering this further than down to 4.
Sword: Currently I deal with Joyeuse off hand and I like that a fair bit. Given the alternatives however, I am considering losing sword merits entirely and using an axe offhand.
Great axe: While I do like this setup alot, I have not really considered meriting it as it's a natural A+, and with Hauby+1, Haidate and fort torque I'm already sporting 283 skill and a fair bit of acc through dex. However, I *should* receive an Askar Korazin pretty soon, and if I want to use that properly I'd need to cover for the 12acc + 6 dex I lose from haub. Sushi is not an option.
MNK:
I love my MNK, and I use it for salvage all the time. On chariots I'm not entirely happy with my meat acc, wishing I had some more. Also I'd like to reach the 291 tier. Faith torque does not look probable the least, so my only option would be to raise it to 8.
DRG:
Currently, I'm sporting homam body, legs, feet meaning I don't feel like acc is much of an issue with unmerited A+ skill. However, Askar Korazin would make acc a slightly bigger issue, similar to the WAR/SAM situation. Compared to WAR though, DRG have double acc traits, but only DEX bonus to acc from gear comes from Rajas, and also do not have the benefit of aggressor 3.30 mins out of 5.
NIN: (not done yet)
If humanly possible I'd like to sport an attack build with Hauby+1 rather than af body sushi build.
So yeah, here's my little bind. Adding to the mix my DRK40 which hopefully will be 75 sometime after summer (though I doubt it). Ultimately I guess it's up to what job I like best, but given I like them equally and want to use them about equally... Input anyone?
EDIT: lol, with the May 28th update notice, announcing increased tier 2 merits, I guess I won't be touching my combat merits until I've capped angon and warrior's charge again to the very least.
