So, it has been pretty busy what with clinical and work and moving my MIL out of the nursing home and back into her own home (who knew that she would have accumulated that much stuff in the past month or so) and I really should be working on my Reflection assignment. But, no. I am battling my tendency to procrastinate but good today. Well, "battling" is a bit optimistic. It happens. So, I finally decided to post my thoughts about Merlin, "The Tears of Uther Pendragon" Parts 1 and 2. I was going to wait till it aired on SyFy but I figured that the only people who might remotely care what I think are those who are also seeking alternate viewing methods. So here we have it. My stream of consciousness bullet point thoughts.
I know "no man is worth your tears" but FCOL, there's a field full of dead people and Arthur is insulting snarkily?
"Is your little bottom sore?" Ah, the line that launched a thousand fics.
Red Cloak!
Is confused?? Are these the same bandits that killed a field full of Camelot's finest? And all we needed to defeat them is Arthur and Magneto Merlin.
Hum, Gaius seems relatively unconcerned about the implications of Morgana's return for Merlin.
Oh, Merlin, the expressions on your face SLAY ME! "I didn't want to" breaks my heart every single viewing!
He wants to believe that she is redeemable. (I do, too) I can buy that.
I think Morgana is more convincing when she is playing innocent but really evil than she is when playing evil and really evil.
10 minutes and Arthur is shirtless. Yeah, babee. It must be in his contract.
*Cringe* Chants: "it is also a kids show. They eat this stuff up *smothers disappointment.*
Evil Smirk #1
I had hoped for a more gradual or more conflicted turn to the dark side but what can you do when there are only 13 eps a series.
*Reminds self that Morgana has been under Morgause's influence for an entire year*
Lovely cinematic scene with the twilight lighting, the billowing cloak, and the slo-mo horse riding.
Mandrake pudding! Where's Bill Cosby?
Is there some magical mandrake lore that I have never heard of or is this a nod to HP
Okay, she sticks her hand into a steaming vat. You know I can't let that go.
The blindfolded fight scene and what follows is more how I expect the pranks, banter and barbs to be.
Evil Smirk #2
Creepiest Merlin scene, evah! (The Ring, anyone?)
Evil Smirk #3 (I'm going to lose count, aren't I?)
Well, that was brutal, Morgana? Not feeling conflicted at all, are we? Sigh.
You may have just killed someone in cold blood but being mean to Gwen is the final straw!
Slo-mo Warrior! Morgause. Yeah!!
Okay, Cenred is HOT
Morgause and Cenred. SMOKING HOT!!
Wonders why Morgause does not need spells. Isn't this supposed to be what makes Merlin unique? It seems every baddie can do it.
"I don't think with my sword." *Snort*
Creepy Wet kid.
I think it is a credit to the writers and ASH that I feel for Uther even as I am being reminded that he drowned children.
Evil Smirk#4
How did Gaius know what Uther saw? Explanatory exposition scene, perhaps?
Oh, come on! He was stabbed, then thrown over a wall only to lie there exposed to the elements for, what, an entire night. You know I can't let that go.
I just love how Gaius leaves all of his critical patients unattended.
Evil Smirk #5
Awwwwwwww. Compassionate! Merlin.
And now you (finally) get smacked aside the head with a clue.
Oh, Pretty cool! She knew Merlin was following her. This came as a surprise to me. I love it when I am surprised.
Do I count Evil Smirks when Morgana is with Morgause? No, that's just crazy talk.
RUN, Merlin, RUN
Awwwwwwwww. Poor Arthur. You know Gaius is right, dontcha. But, your father never listens to him so why should you.
Merlin in magical chains!! Oh, Morgause, he intrigues me, too. Believe you me!!
Okay, I want more showdowns between Merlin and Morgause. Pretty please!
Evil Smirk#6
Oh, Colin! You make me believe that Merlin is really being attacked by a multitude of giant scorpion thingies (Serket? Really? I thought we were doing Arthurian mythology here. My Stargate mind wanders. Now that would be a Goa'uld I'd like to see!)
Awwwwwwwww. Poor Arthur. Bad Morgana!
Does she really care nothing for Arthur at all? *Is sad*
Nope. See Evil Smirk #7
DRAGONTONGUE!!!!!
Wheeeeeeeee!!!!!!
Epic Dragonsequence. EPIC!!
On to Part 2
Love the first scene with Merlin and his magic dragon.
Helpless! Arthur. Oh, how I love the way your nightshirt drapes your manly physique just so. That's about as good as shirtless, I reckon!
Evil Smirk#8
Gee, Kilgarrah is rather magnanimous now that he is free. And he's prophesying all over the place. Merlin's poor destiny is becoming rather busy and crowded, methinks. His determination to see goodness will be his undoing? Oh, dear.
I don't care if it is The Neverending Story, Titanic, and Harry Potter all rolled into one. I adore the dragonriding scene! I'm just a kid like that.
Now how do you miss a giant dragon on the outskirts of Camelot....One who nearly decimated the city, no less?
BTW, Merlin, the fate of your entire world rests on you. No pressure or anything.
"I'll have you for breakfast" - And the Fanfic writers go wild.
Hummm, Ygraine and the drowned children. Very creepy. Wait! Her ring!! Is that the same ring Arthur wears?
I love you, Sir Leon!
Give her the eyebrow, Gaius. That'll stop her evil machinations.
Or maybe not. Evil Smirk#9
Gasp! Sir Leon has lines. LINES!!
And more lines. Why, he has more lines than Gwen!
Ah, Kingly! Arthur. You look good in that chair.
Oh, there's Gwen. I adore the bromance, I really do. But this is a very sweet scene, too. I guess I'm just an equal opportunity shipper on this show.
Evil Smirk#10 (10!!! Are you kidding me?)
Why does Morgause not question how Merlin was freed? Surely she can figure out what it is about Merlin.
What a lovely, albeit blink and you miss it moment of doubt and indecision on the part of Morgana.
"Your favorite, pickled eggs" *giggles*
I love the music here. I think it is one of my faves from the series one soundtrack
OMG! Leon has yet more lines. He has talked more in this ep than in the previous two series combined.
Long love Sir Leon!!
"Sire, It's time"
You know, Merlin really does sound more confident and mature. He's coming into his own. I really, really hope this continues.
Okay, where have they been stashing all these troops in Camelot?
Oh THIS! Beautiful! I love how Merlin has begun talking to Arthur as though Arthur knows about his magic and their destiny. I love the demonstration of what they will become and the reminder that THIS is really what exists between them under all of the outward show of pranks and snark.
Wow, Cenred and Morgause are hard at it. Sieges are so grueling.
I loved Uther charging into battle but I couldn't help but wonder who dressed him.
Epic battle sequences. Run away, run away....
Favorite spell. Forbearnen (sp?) Oh, Colin, I just love how that word rolls off your lips. Set's me on fire, too.
At least Gaius didn't leave his patients totally unattended this time. Trailing Morgana, I can just see him thinking, "I'm too old for this shit!"
Man, I was really worried that Morgana would hurt Gaius.
Okay, I laughed out loud at the skeleton arm chasing Merlin. Who knows whether this is what they were going for or not.
Oh Merlin and Morgana. You intrigue me as well!
Merlin, didn't the dragon just warn you 40 minutes ago that trying to see the goodness would be your undoing?
Tell her. TELL HER!!! TELL SOMEONE! It's KILLING MEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!
Okay, was that another brief moment of doubt or am I seeing what I wanted to see.
Oh, no wait. Evil Smirk #..... (Oh heck. I've lost count)
And Merlin saves the day.......unnoticed.......again.
And the look on Merlin's face just before Morgana is lauded as the hero...awwww..
Wow, those charged looks between Morgana and Merlin. It is SO on!
Gaius to Merlin: "Don't let that ever happen to you" .....foreshadowing?
