Tomoeda District
Tomoeda is a seemingly normal suburb of a seemingly-normal Tokyo. It's a pleasant, upper-middle-class neighborhood with its own elementary and high schools, neat little houses and clean roads. Highlights include the large local aquarium, a park with a distinctive slide in the shape of a giant penguin, and a lively shopping district where one can find delicious parfait. Absolutely nothing strange or magical ever happens in Tomoeda.
Honest.
Wow, heat wave in Tomoeda! Thankfully, Sakura's on her summer break right now, and while she should probably be working on her summer homework, instead she's outside at the local shopping district, sipping from cherry ice, just outside of Twin Bells. Kero declined to come out today, claiming he wanted to stay in the safe, cool air-conditioning, but she doesn't entirely mind.
Something strange and magical is moving into Tomoeda. Or perhaps that should be, back to...
Around midday, two large-sized vans trucks were hard to miss as they trucked through the neighbourhood. Their destination? A rather large, and very old house with gardens that has always been there, but never lived in for as long as anyone can remember. ..It's a fuzzy memory at best, mind you, but the memory remains.
Either way, the trucks came, delivered and left, and there will be tongues a-wagging in wonder for a little while.
As with all new homes, the fridge came stocked with emptiness. Which would be why two figures move with a lazy, curious gait through the small town. Neither draw a large amount of attention; the tall girl with long brown hair gets a few glances and grins from a couple of local lads, but she seems more intent on nattering in her companion's ear. Which will likely be how Sakura first spots them: the brunette swinging her arms wide as she spins about in glee, and the short, dark haired young boy at her side smiling rather indulgently at her antics.
Sakura turns around and blinks when she hears the figures approaching. Wow, new people! Not unusual now that the Gates are open, but from their clothes, tohose two nicely-dressed people would appear to be natives of her plane, or at least a similar one. Maybe they were new to Tomoeda!
It's not in her nature to be rude, so the elementary student grins and walks right up to the older girl and younger(?) boy, bowing and then greeting them with a wave with as much cheer as she offers anyone.
Which is a lot.
"Good afternoon! Are you two new to the area? My name is Sakura Kinomoto. Nice to meet you!"
Something about one of the figures keeps making her feel...well...just a little hanyan! Strange.
Isn't it nice to have people from your own plane be unfamiliar for a change? Not that we mean to imply that 'Foreigners' or foreigners are unwelcome, but..
There is mild surprise on both faces as Sakura approaches them, the boy's brows arched very slightly and the older teen's staring with feline curiousity as the wave is followed by greeting is followed by bow.
And then earns what can only be a squeal, Nakuru clapping her hands together in abject delight. "She's so CUTE." <3 Even her cheeks seem to flush with colour, before the young woman leans forward, likely invading Sakura's personal space if she doesn't move fast enough. People here have been SO FRIENDLY~! <3 I'm Nakuru! Nakuru Akizuki!"
A throat clears, and a slightly apologetic look is offered by dark blue eyes as the boy steps forward, returning Sakura's bow. "Thank you, S--Kinomoto-san." Collecting himself a moment, the boy straightens, eyes closing behind his large lensed glasses as he smiles. "Yes, we just arrived in town today from England. Nakuru wanted to explore, and I thought it would be a good idea to get some food."
Strange, you say...? There is no perceivable magical aura here abouts to give the young man away -- locked under several layers of seals, he's just an ordinary boy. o/' ..But a soul's aura is a little different.. "It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Eriol Hiiragizawa."
"...Hooeee?" It isn't that Sakura isn't used to this sort of reaction from people, her best friend being Tomoyo Daidouji and all, but she's still a bit taken aback by Nakuru's close-quarters cooing. "N-nice to meet you, Akizuki-saan!" Eyes wide, though a nervous smile remains.
The girl relaxes a little more when Eriol introduces himself in a far more polite manner. "And you too, Hiiragizawa-san!...wow, you're from England? That's so far away! I've never been there, not even through a gate!" Vinay DeZexay was the closest she could think of, off the top of her head. "I can show you both around town, if you want. Though if you're tired from moving and all, I understand!"
She. Is. So. Cute~ <3
But mentioning the journey does earn a yawn from the older girl. Back arching slightly as she straightens up, hand covers Nakuru's mouth with a dramatic splay of fingers. "It was a reeeeeally long journey. In fact, I should get home and finish unpacking." There's a great deal of anticipation in her voice for the chore ahead.
No comment from the raven-haired peannut gallery.
"I'll see you at home later then, Nakuru?" The boy's head tilts to one side as he peers up at the taller teen, who gives a big nod, and a dramatic sigh. "I'll have to get a tour from you another time, Kinomoto-san~! But for now, bai bai~" Fingers wiggle, and off she sashays, intent to delivering terror---ahem, /affection/ upon her 'sibling' while the Master is away.
"I do apologise for her," Eriol says after a moment, hands still by his side but smile a bit wider. "It was a very long flight, and she hasn't had a chance to settle down still." He makes little effort to follow in her wake. That would be rude to the nice young girl his age who has made such a nice offer!
"Ah, I would be quite glad for someone to do so. The streets are very different from England. But Japan is very lovely. I am very glad to have the opportunity to come here." The mention of the Gates gets a blink, briefly confused before interest perks. "I had not heard that there was a Gate here! How amazing! Have you ever used it, Kinomoto-san?"
"Hoe, it's okay! She seems nice!" Overbearing, Sakura thinks, but still nice! "I can show you around! I've lived here all my life, but I know it can be scary moving into a new place where you don't know anyone." She gestures for Eriol to follow her as she starts walking down the street, though she doesn't walk too fast, so that the young boy can keep up.
"That store is Twin Bells. The lady who runs it is very nice! And that place sells the best cherry parfait." She starts pointing out her favorite 'landmarks' as the two go on. "Hey, Hiiragizawa-kun, if you don't mind me asking. Are you going to be attending school here? I go to Tomoeda Elementary, and I know classes start up again in a couple of weeks..."
Spinel Sun would most certainly agree with you there.
"It can be, but I am quite excited as well. There is much to see and do here!" Following three steps behind, Eriol pushes his glasses up to the bridge of his nose, looking about as various stores are indicated. This place.. So different, but still the same at heart. He has no problems keeping up with a faster pace.
"I see! I will certainly have to remember to come back and try some once we're settled at home," the boy comments as the bakery is indicated, pausing to peer through the window at the patrons within and the food on offer. He lingers not long, quick-stepping to catch up with his guide. And her own question.
"Ah! Yes, I am. I will be transferring officially to Tomoeda Elementary at the start of the new term. The paperwork was finalised before I left home." The second landmark is noted with a closed-eyed smile. He'll have to remember that one, too.. "I have been told the schools here are quite different to the ones at home in England. Do you think we might be in the same class, Kinomoto-san?"
Sakura's eyes light up, and she grins brightly at Eriol's news. "That's great! I hope we're in the same class together! I don't know if we will, since I'm not sure how they assign people into classes. Um, the schools aren't that different from Western schools, I think, but everyone has to wear a uniform. And we have lunch in the classroom or outside, instead of a cafeteria." Yes, she's heard a /few/ things from Buttercup and Junior, though perhaps those are not the most normal examples. "And we have to learn all sorts of subjects right now. My English is getting a lot better now, but math is still hard!" She huffs and makes a face.
And then the little voice in Sakura's head called 'Common Sense' points out that Eriol asked another question back there. "Oh, the Gates? Y-yeah, I've been in them once or twice!" Kind of a fib. "I like to go shopping in that big city they have in the Hub! You can buy all sorts of stuff. Once I found an apple that tasted like a banana!'
"I would like that as well," the boy replies with enthusiasm. "That way, I will be familiar with at least one person! That makes settling in much easier, I think.." There does not seem to be much surprise at the news of uniforms: "Quite a few schools in England have those as well. Or a specific dress code to abide by. I'm going to pick mine up this week after we're done unpacking." Which will take all of five minutes. Tops.
"Math is useful, but if you would ever like help with your English, I would be happy to assist." One might never realise he was from Great Britain, what with the lack of accent clinging to his Japanese!
Little fibs are acceptable. Besides, he would too, in Sakura's place. "Oh my, how very odd! That would certainly make for an interesting meal." A finger presses to his lips thoughtfully. The possibilities! People allergic to bananas might be able to finally discover the taste! ..How could the mage not approve? "Can anyone visit, or do you need special permission, Kinomoto-san? A passport, perhaps..?"
"Hmm. I think it's okay for anyone to visit," Sakura explains, "since no one really /owns/ the Gates. But you need to be careful, and you can't cause trouble in other places, obviously! I mean, there are worlds out there that are dangerous, so you shouldn't travel alone. But that's just common sense. Like swimming alone!"
Sakura Kinomoto on Interdimensional Travel, folks.
"And thank you! I think it is getting better. How is this?" She clears her throat, and starts speaking in heavily-accented English. "(Mary had a little lamb, his fleece was snowy...")
Yuuko would laugh so very hard if she heard such a simple explaination. But it's so fitting!
If her words amuse, Eriol gives no sign, save that smile widens to a grin, and a hand runs through short dark hair. "So, it is like visiting another country, but with less restrictions than using an airport?" Privately, the mage wonders if it is sensible for things to be left in an 'unguarded' state; something to investigate, amongst other things.
The accent is strong, but not unexpected. Eriol doubts they have many native speakers to assist with the class, after all. "That's very good, Kinomoto-san! You speak very well. However," his tone is not lecturing, oddly enough, "The line goes.."
Accent switch: educated, and distinctly Not Japanese - ("His fleece was white as snow.") The words are slowly enunciated, stressing the words slightly at the right moments. "Want to try again?"
Sakura concentrates. ("With freece-...fleece as whiiite as snow!") It's considerably better. She should learn more English so she can speak it on other planes without the translator. "How was that? I like the way you speak English, though! It sounds a little different from how my American friends speak it...and yeah, I guess it's like that! I know there are rules, like you can't fight or do anything violent in the Hub place, which is good! There are some really bad people out there!"
R and L are tricky letters when used in sentances, aren't they? "Much better, Kinomoto-san! Just remember to speak the words slowly over and over until you have them right. It helps a lot."
"English and American accents tend to differ a lot. And not all people in England have the same accent as myself, either! It can differ depending on where you grew up." And if he can get his future classmates to speak with an English Accent, that's one more win for the defunct British Empire! Huzzah!
..Achem. "There are bad people everywhere, I think. Some are just better at hiding it than others. But I'm sure the both of us will be careful, hai?"
"Thank you!" Sakura grins, nodding enthusiastically. "I can remember that. And I guess it's like how people who grew up in Osaka sound different from people in Tokyo, right?"
Somewhere, Kero-chan sneezes.
"Oh, yes, I'm always very careful! And you seem like a careful person, Hiiragizawa-kun, so it'll probably be fine. If you do go to other worlds, you can make all kinds of friends, though. I know a couple of superheroes," she beams, "and a half-demon prince! Um, well the prince isn't always nice, but he's just lonely..."
Somewhere, somewhen, somehow, Clow Reed whistles absently. He had nothing to do with that. Nope~ o/'
"That's it exactly! Although it is joked in England that Americans no longer speak English at all. They've made all sorts of spelling and pronounciation changes, you see." And assuming that hasn't confused Sakura too much, lets move onto the next topic!
"Well, I do try to be, Kinomoto-san! Is there anyone in particular I should keep an eye out for?" Any beginners' advantages he can glean would be most useful! "--Really? Oh my, and demons? And to think, such creatures and people reside only in storybooks here.." Ah hah. Hah.
"So is it...Americanglish...Or...hoe," Sakura sighs, "that's confusing! I'll just call it all English."
She skips ahead to keep up, and keeps on chattering, cheerful as ever. "The prince's name is Nergal, though he goes by Junior, and the superhero is Superman, who is /really cool./ He can fly! And..oh, and there's my, um, classmate, Li-kun. Li Syaoran. He might like having another kid in the school to be his friend!"
She has no clue, poor girl.
"No, no, English is fine," reassures Eriol, slightly sheepish as he waves a hand with care. "I'm sorry. I did not mean to confuse you with my joke."
Demonic royalty and a-list super heroes? That is certainly some company you keep, Sakura! "Wow! I cannot imagine what meeting them must be like. I certainly hope I have the chance to."
And then, oh. Oh my. Oh my oh *my*. "Syaoran, you said?" /Huh/. Now that's interesting.. "Li Syaoran. I will have to remember that name! I hope that I will have the good fortune of being introduced to him by you, Kinomoto-san."
No. Idea. At. All. Anything more, unfortunately will have to wait. Glancing at his watch, the boy's breath catches, and he slows to a stop. "Ah, I am sorry, Kinomoto-san. But I should start making my way back now." Spinel and Nakuru might worry. And then go looking for him. That wouldn't bode well at /all/. Bowing, the boy adds: "Thank you very much for showing me around."
"Oh, that's fine! I had a lot of fun, and it was nice meeting you, Hiiragizawa-kun!" Sakura beams, and stands still as she waves and bows at Eriol. "I hope you enjoy it here in Tomoeda. It should be fun and..."
Well, time for her to be a little honest. "Eventful!"
There's a chuckle at that, the boy casting one last wave over his shoulder before walking away, glancing about for the sign posting. Not that he needs their aid, but, well. She doesn't need to know that yet.
Ahh, Sakura. You have no idea.
