The Washington Capitals are no more. Well, strictly speaking, they are no more in the world of the Stanley Cup playoffs because they were ousted by the Montreal Canadiens. This was the number one team in the NHL, they lead the entire league with the most points and have some of the best players on the team but the Habs were just too good for them. Let me get one thing straight, the regular season is NOT the same as the playoffs. A team this good cannot expect the same results in the playoff when they had dominated that same team in the regular season. No ruttin' way! I could usually tell if the Caps would win or lose the game and when Montreal made their goal in the first period, I knew the Caps would lose. The stats said it all. I had hoped that the Caps would prove me wrong but it was clear throughout the periods after that they would not be able to tie up the game nor win it. It was a HUGE disappointment, a HUGE upset in the NHL. Everyone thought the Caps had this series. Once the series was 3-2, it was becoming a possibility that Caps would not make it past the first round. Then the series was tied up at 3-3 and then came game seven and it was over. I feel for the guys, really. The waived off goal should have been reviewed and it may have changed the outcome of the game. We'll never know. There should have been a penalty when a Habs slammed in to the Caps goaltender, but there was not. So many "what ifs" but the game is over and in the books. Time to move on. The Habs are now set to play the Penguins and I hate the Penguins but I hope they slaughter the Habs.
Meanwhile, my favorite team, the Detroit Red Wings beat the Phoenix Coyotes (San Antonio Rampage's NHL "parent" team) and are set to play the San Jose Sharks. I hope Detroit makes it. I love those guys.
There has been a LOT of upsets in the first round, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, and the Washington Capitals, just to name a few, but that is the playoffs for you. I hope for the best in the second round. It will be game one tomorrow. I'll be wearing my Fedorov jersey and cheering the boys! GO RED WINGS!
