For the past week or so, I've been debating with myself whether it's worth my time and energy to finish The Academy and the two sequels I have in progress. I don't know whether it was due to my cold or the fact that I'm PMSing (highly emotional). I know that what I've written isn't liked by all and I know that I'm not a perfect writer and that's all okay by me, because I don't like everything I read either. Every writer has their own style of telling their story. Some are wordy, and some are not. Okay, I went off the topic there a bit. Sorry.
I was feeling a bit down about the story until I decided to go through some of my email folders when I came across an email about a story I had written four years ago in The Invisible Man fandom. Let me set the stage before I post the email.
Around the time of Stephen King's birthday, it was decided to have a Stephen King Appreciation Ficathon Contest. The story could either be based on a novel/short story of King's or a crossover. Like usual, I decided to do a crossover with The Stand. Little did I know what I was getting myself into by trying to incorporate the I-Man characters into the world of The Stand.
I decided to also post it at ff.net (btw, I don't post there anymore). So here's the point of my post. This is the reply I received after I had posted chapter 2.
You must, MUST post the rest of this! Not only is this a bonus in the fact it's a unique Stand cross over, but you are one of the few people left on FFnet that seems to be able to write fluidly, punctuate and spell.
Don't make me have to beg or promise to have your babies. In the words of Oliver, 'can I have some more please sir?'
Now, I don't profess this story I wrote to be perfect, but the fact is this comment - even though it was four years ago and for a different fandom - means a lot to me even today. It has given me the push I needed to get back into writing again and finishing this monster and even the two sequels.
BTW, a winner was never announced because there were few fics written, however, I did win Second Place in a fic contest for it.
So, yes - as the title of my post states - comments do make a difference, a world of difference. And I guess this comes in time for the Tin Man Author Appreciation Week. And I hope that other fandoms follow suit. And in fact, I just might start one on my Donna Noble comm. ;)
Show the writers some love!
