persiflage_1 picked: captain jack harkness, david tennant, donna noble, martha jones, romana, the invisible man, torchwood
Captain Jack Harkness: Jack starts off being self-absorbed and not really caring about his actions. But like anyone else, once meeting the Doctor, he makes a complete turn around and we see the true Jack Harkness. What I admire most about Jack is his openness about his sexuality. He is also loyal and compassionate. He has sacrificed himself on more than one occasion for the greater good and for his friends.
David Tennant: Badda-boomba! My exposure to David Tennant was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Too bad he wasn't it that much. Since then, I've seen him in Casanova, Secret Smile, Blackpool, L.A. Without a Map, Recovery, Learners, Takin' Over the Asylum, and soon Love in the 21st Century and of course Doctor Who. To me, Tennant is a well rounded actor. He's done everything from comedy to plain out creepy. He genuinely appears to be down to earth and very willing to meet with fans. He is an awesome actor that here in the U.S., we have just gotten to know him. And I thank the U.K. for sharing him with us. And he's such a geek himself. He's one of the few actors that I actively search out his work online or in the stores. And he's pretty funny in drag.
Donna Noble: What can I say about Donna Noble? She's loud, she's crass, she says it like it is and I LOVE HER! Donna in so many ways reminded me of some of the classic companions such as Romana I, Tegan, and even Sarah Jane. Donna was smarter than what she gave herself credit for. She would question the Doctor, yelled at him and showed compassion even when he was reluctant to. She wasn't afraid to stand up to him. Once she met the Doctor, she changed in so many ways. And she's a house God (Fires of Pompeii)!
Martha Jones: My favorite episodes with Martha would have to be Human Nature/Family of Blood. She was put in a situation where she had to literally babysit the Doctor turned-human. She put up with racism and sexism for nearly three months all for the safety of the Doctor. I found her to be a strong female character (when she was written right). She got the Doctor to talk about his past. What I really liked about Martha was her loyalty to her family. She was obviously the heart and soul of the Jones' household (the fact that they all called her about the family crisis in Smith and Jones). And in the end, she chose them over the Doctor, and that I admire. And she can run in heels! I can hardly run in sneakers.
Romana: My favorite companion!!!!
ROMANA: I may be "inexperienced", but I did graduate from the Academy with a triple first.
DOCTOR: I suppose you think we should be impressed by that too?
ROMANA: Well, it's better than scraping through with 51% on the second attempt.
And that's just the beginning of their relationship. She's not impressed by him at all at first, but she knows she can learn a lot from him. Being a Time Lord/Lady herself, she had an insight into him that no other companion could. He was supposed to drop her off after they had found the Key to Time, but elected to stay with him only to be left behind (her own decision) in E-space. I really must go back and watch all the episodes with Romana again. They had a special relationship that only two Gallifreyans could have. And interesting how he had kept Romana's room as it was until he absolutely needed to jettison it. Both Romanas were very different in their approach towards the Doctor and traveling, but both were smart, forceful and very confident. She also challenged the Doctor on occasions. Of all the companions he had to say goodbye to: I think this one bothered him the most. Four wasn't big on emotions, but you could tell it pained him to see her stay behind. For a short time, he had an equal, someone that truly understood him and other than his TARDIS, she represented the best of Gallifrey. (I know I didn't do Romana justice in this bit, my meds are kicking in. I'll update it later)
Torchwood: I have to admit, I still haven't seen all of S2 yet. I don't remember the last episode I saw, but I hated it and I'm actually finding it difficult to watch the rest of the series. So I'll base my comments on S1. I like Torchwood because it's so different, it's an adult version of Doctor Who. Jack in S1 was darker and understandably so. He wants answers and there's only person that can give him the answers he seeks, the Doctor. We also see him working with a rag-tag bunch of people who really can't have a life because of what they do. Poor Gwen, she stumbles upon them and finds herself battling aliens and saving the world on occasion while trying to keep this from her boyfriend, Rhys. There's a mixture of personalities in this group, they fight, they shoot each other, they kiss, they shag, they comfort each other, it's GREAT!
The Invisible Man: I saved this one for last. This was a show that lasted only two years on the SciFi Channel from 2000 - 2002. In short, it's about a thief (Darien Fawkes) who agrees to a science experiment to escape a life sentence in prison. His brother, the geeky, smart, Dr. Kevin Fawkes, has a developed an invisibility gland and he doesn't trust anybody but Darien. Well, to make a long story short, Darien has the gland implanted, can turn invisible, is afraid of spiders, the gland was messed with by Arnaud De Fehrn (the resident bad guy), it causes Darien to go into quicksilver madness so he needs a shot at least once a week, his partner is Bobby Hobbes who is nutso and on meds, his doctor is the beautiful Claire Keeply (no one knows her real last name), the government organization that is watching Fawkes is run by Charles Borden a.k.a. The Fat Man, the CPA is Eberts (a nerd to the max who has a pet turtle). Vincent Ventresca (if you watched Friends then you know him as Fun Bobby) plays Darien Fawkes. Paul Ben-Victor is Hobbes. I have to say that these two had the greatest chemistry I have ever seen on TV, in fact this is true for the entire cast. The banter between Fawkes and Hobbes is classic and they forge a friendship out of distrust. The show was really starting to hit it's stride when Skiffy decided to cancel it. They have yet to give a satisfactory reason for this. This show was my introduction into online fandom, fic writing and being a geek. This show didn't take itself seriously and it shows (hokey science, but that's what sci-fi is for, right?). But, it also kept us on the edge of our seats at times, made us laugh and cry. If you didn't catch this one, I highly recommend it. Currently S1 is on DVD and it's on
Hulu.com. I hope that they release S2 in the future. I wish I could say more but a storm is rolling in and I'm loopy.
