Madalyn says the moist air is affecting her and tries to leave. Joad sits her back down, but also knows it's more than just the moist air.

Joad listens as she tells him that God wanted her to finish the staircase. He tells her it's not that important.

"God wants music in the chapel. He wishes it." Joad: "No, you wish it."

M: "It's my lack of faith that it's cracking apart." J: "No, it's your lack of faith that's cracking you into pieces...I'm not building your staircase, just a staircase."

Madalyn says the staircase is her service to God. Joad tells her she can't proclaim the nature of her service. J: "Are you trying to match your will against God's?"

Joad lists the things she can't control: Indians, time, money, and death.

"...or even the wood."

"Yes, the wood is wrong for building staircases, but it might be perfect for building faith."

She listens as he tells her they should promise to keep their eyes open.

M: "How can I promise to keep my eyes open when I'm so blind?" J: "Sounds like self pity."

M: "I've only done what I thought best." J: "Sounds like self-righteousness." M: "I'm worthless." J: "That's dishonest."

M: "What's left?" Joad starts to chuckle.

M: "I'm so glad that you find the wreckage of my life so amusing." J: "No, I just still can't believe they forgot to build a staircase."

She starts laughing.

He tells her he used to have a family.

Madalyn tells him her real name and that used to pray to Saint Joseph when she was a little girl. "You seem so familiar to me, as if I might have know you then. I've never regretted taking my vows."

Later the next day, we learn that Geronimo has escaped. Now Mouly is seen at the chapel. *cue dramatic music*
