1
Madalyn says the moist air is affecting her and tries to leave. Joad sits her back down, but also knows it's more than just the moist air.
2
Joad listens as she tells him that God wanted her to finish the staircase. He tells her it's not that important.
3
4
5
"God wants music in the chapel. He wishes it." Joad: "No, you wish it."
6
M: "It's my lack of faith that it's cracking apart." J: "No, it's your lack of faith that's cracking you into pieces...I'm not building your staircase, just a staircase."
7
8
Madalyn says the staircase is her service to God. Joad tells her she can't proclaim the nature of her service. J: "Are you trying to match your will against God's?"
9
Joad lists the things she can't control: Indians, time, money, and death.
10
"...or even the wood."
11
"Yes, the wood is wrong for building staircases, but it might be perfect for building faith."
12
She listens as he tells her they should promise to keep their eyes open.
13
M: "How can I promise to keep my eyes open when I'm so blind?" J: "Sounds like self pity."
14
M: "I've only done what I thought best." J: "Sounds like self-righteousness." M: "I'm worthless." J: "That's dishonest."
15
M: "What's left?" Joad starts to chuckle.
16
17
M: "I'm so glad that you find the wreckage of my life so amusing." J: "No, I just still can't believe they forgot to build a staircase."
18
She starts laughing.
19
20
21
"You are the most curious man I've ever met Mr. Joad." J: "Could you please just call me Joad."
22
23
24
25
He tells her he used to have a family.
26
Madalyn tells him her real name and that used to pray to Saint Joseph when she was a little girl. "You seem so familiar to me, as if I might have know you then. I've never regretted taking my vows."
27
"What God chooses for us is not what we always might choose for ourselves..."
28
"...for me, too."
29
"Thank you, Joad." "You're welcome, Joanna."
30
31
Later the next day, we learn that Geronimo has escaped. Now Mouly is seen at the chapel. *cue dramatic music*
32
Somebody is destroying the staircase.
33
34
35
Rolling Thunder chases Joad. This will be important later.
36
37
The sheriff is questioning Filger about the staircase.
38
39
40
Filger is shot when Mouly confronts him.
41
Filger tells the sheriff that Joad shot him. Yeah, knew that was coming.
42
Sister Margaret tells the sheriff that Joad couldn't have shot Filger, but doesn't know where Joad went.
43
44
45
It was hard to cap, but Joad is being followed by Geronimo and Paco.
46
Paco falls off his horse, Rosey.
47
It's the Tin Man!
48
49
The pants still are not doing him any justice. ;)
50
Icon!
51
52
Geronimo!
53
*thinking* Crap.
54
55
56
57
58
The Indians with Geronimo move behind Joad.
59
60
61
Geronimo asks the white man if he's afraid and Joad says 'no'. Yeah, right. And yes, that is Rodney Grant (Tonané from the SG1 episode Spirits).
62
Geronimo told the Indians to load the logs.
63
Joad tells Geronimo that he won't tell anyone because if a man doesn't want to be found, he won't be.
64
65
66
The Indians saved Paco from the wolves.
67
68
69
Paco thinks the Indians will kill them, but Geronimo tells them they will be able to go home.
70
71
72
73
Paco is curious why the Indians didn't kill them. Joad tells them because they didn't want to. Paco: "I'm glad that wasn't Geronimo." Joad: "That was Geronimo."
74
Paco: *thinking* Holy crap!
75
76
77
78
79
Joad tells Madalyn that he destroyed the staircase. She tells him that he has a bad temper.
80
81
82
83
The sheriff is going to arrest Joad.
84
85
Rolling Thunder tells Paco that Senior Joan didn't shoot Filger.
86
87
88
89
90
Pruitt asks Joad if he shot Filger.
91
92
Joad says, 'no' and explains that he's never shot a gun and doesn't know how to load one.
93
94
95
Rolling Thunder tells the sheriff that Joad left before Filger was shot.
96
97
98
99
100
Madalyn tells him the story of what happened when the Indians killed a couple of Nuns.
101
102
103
Joad reacts when he hears the three Nuns, including Madalyn, were raped and the other two Nuns were killed in front of her.
104
105
106
107
Joad visits Filger.
108
109
It's a trap!
110
111
Bad Mouly!
112
113
114
115
J: "I am not the carpenter you want to kill. Give me the gun." ;)
116
117
118
119
*thinking* Jedi mind-trick really works.
120
121
122
I love how he carefully sets the gun down as if he was holding a baby.
123
124
Tells Filger that while in jail, he heard a tune and whistles it to see if Filger could recognize it. Which you know Filger will.
125
126
Filger tells him and Joad asks him to play it for him.
127
Filger is all, 'But I framed you and you want me to play for you?' Joad: "Play the damn tune already. Geesh"
128
129
130
And it's back to work on the staircase with the right wood.
131
132
133
Gives her a walking stick he made out of the same wood as the staircase.
134
135
136
Explains the wood for her and is comparing it with her.
137
138
139
140
141
142
143
144
145
He watches as she leaves the chapel knowing that her time is short.
146
147
148
149
So, he works all day and night to finish the staircase before she passes.
150
151
152
He checks on her, but she doesn't know he's there.
153
Filger explains to Madalyn how he swindled $3000 from the Sisters to pay off his wife's gambling debt. Omitting the staircase was on purpose to get more money from them.
154
155
The boys announce the staircase is finished.
156
157
158
159
Sister Margaret tells Madalyn that Joad left without getting paid.
160
"He's gone, he's gone." You can see it in her eyes she starts to believe that he was Saint Joseph.
161
162
She climbs the stairs.
163
164
Joad senses that Madalyn is gone.
165
166
He tosses the flowers towards heaven.
167
168
169
170
171
Billy narrates this part. He talks about the legend of the stranger and what the staircase represents. He also tells how people still marvel how it was built without nails.
172
A railing was added years later.
173
