Summary: About two months after Bad Company.

Government

‘You’re alone, they don’t love you, they don’t care about you.’

“Garrett?”

‘I’m your family. I’ll never turn my back on you like they did.’

“Garrett Cain!”

Garrett didn’t know how long he had been distracted, but the hard shove to his shoulder chased the voice in his head away. For now. He knew she would be back. She always came back. He blinked and released the breath he didn’t know he was holding.

“You okay?” Garrett glanced at Ian and nodded. “Did you hear anything I asked?”

In truth, he didn't a clue what was asked. He glanced around the room, an apology in his eyes as he met each man’s gaze. Ian sighed. This isn’t the first time Garrett blanked out on them during a meeting and it was becoming annoying to some.

Garrett was meeting with a group that called themselves ‘Separatists’. They have been meeting for a few months now and at first, in secret, but as time passed, the group’s numbers grew. They wanted to see changes in how the people were governed. The wanted the royal family to have a limited role in ruling the Zone and they wanted the countries separated, like before the time of Ozma.

While Garrett and others agreed with the idea of the royal family having limited powers, he didn’t like the idea of a separated Zone. He fought and suffered for the Zone, as did many, and the thought of the Zone separating made him feel that all he endured was in vain. His eldest son, Riley and his sister-in-law, Adora, did not die for the Zone to split. This was the one idea he would fight Ian on.

Ian exhaled, exasperated with Garrett’s inability to focus these past few weeks. “I asked if you are still against the countries seceding and forming our own self-ruling government.”

Garrett didn’t need any time to think about his answer. “Yeah, I am,” he said quickly and adamantly, “there’s no reason to secede. We can have both, a royal family and a self-ruling government.”

“With an outsider as our new Queen?” asked someone from the back of the room.

Garrett narrowed his eyes. “DG is not an outsider; she’s as much a Zonian as the rest of us.” He lifted himself from the chair and gazed around the room, challenging anyone who may oppose him, to speak up. “She fought at the Tower, faced the Sorceress alone and protected the emerald. How many of you joined the Resistance? Fought against the Longcoats? Imprisoned in a camp or…an iron suit?” He looked around the room and watched most men avoid eye contact with him. He nodded. “If you stayed out of it, kept your distance, you have no right to judge DG’s loyalty.”

LOL Of course it does. Wouldn't be Garrett if it didn't. :)

I think it's a really neat touch. The colors are great behind it.
