Work Randomness

Jul 25, 2010 18:53

Interesting day at the office today. And by office I mean checkstand of doom.

We had a new assistant manageresque person come today. And by "esque" I mean that I can't tell if the people who wear white button downs are just glorified tellers or actually have the word "manager" on their name badge somewhere. Or "supervisor." I don't have a read on Keith yet, but he talks sort of like Chris Rock which makes him pretty interesting at least.

I had a 7.5 hour shift of evil today. Being a cashier is physically and mentally taxing even though we just stand all day. Standing takes it out of your body, it really does. But anyways we're moving on.

The power went out. And the generators didn't kick in. The generators always kick in. Always. That way our food doesn't go bad and the customers can actually buy their groceries. But they didn't kick in. Well, sort of. The checkstands' computer systems were working. Nothing else was. Well, I guess something else was. We have weird uber emergency spot lights in the "floor" section of the store apparently. I've never seen those on, but now I know what those bizzare rectangle things are for.

Keith, it being his first day, ran to the back to try and figure it out. Meanwhile all of the cashiers are in near pitch black going, "WTH?" Luckily (for the customers) the power came back on pretty much right after that. It was out for 10 minutes, tops.

Now for more randomness.

Things I do not like about Safeway:

-People making me pick change out of their hands
-One 15 minute break for a 4 to 5.75 hour shift
-Two 15 minute breaks for a 6 to 8 hour shift
-Getting yelled at for accidently working more than 8 hours (we have to get paid overtime)
-Having to work on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, and the Fourth of July
-The only day all year that Safeway doesn't open is Christmas
-Tax Exempt orders because those people have a budget and don't pay attention to it when shopping
-Multiple cart orders
-WIC checks that people don't read the instructions for
-Food Stamps that people don't understand
-Customers who bitch because they read the sign wrong/didn't give me the coupons/haven't put their club card in yet/I'm going too slow/I'm going too fast/they just hate life
-People who leave cakes in the oven before going to the store (yes, this has happened to me. Twice)
-People who, immediately after I hand them the receipt, ask to see the manager
-People who don't even wait that long to ask for Joe
-Not being allowed to have water in our checkstands
-Standing for 3.75-7.75 hours nearly everyday
-7 hour shifts
-The lack of healthy, ready to eat options for our break
-Forcing retirement on people
-Making me wear this stupid unifrom. Giant lets their employees wear jeans
-Breaking nails
-Lifting 20-30 packs of water or soda
-Dog food
-Cat food
-Cat litter
-Grumpy customers
-No free Starbucks samples anymore (the assistant manager actually suspended one of the Starbucks barristas because she had some whipped cream)
-Sucky pay rates and union dues and taxes
-5:00 AM to 12:00 PM hours because it really means 5:00 AM to 2:00 AM hours when everything's said and done. Luckily I don't close. Ever
-10% off all Safeway brand products excluding milk, meat & seafood, and deli products
-Jessica Simpson, Backstreet Boys, and other 90s pop music on the speakers. ALL THE TIME
-Courtesy clerks who don't do their job

Things I like about Safeway

-10% off all Safeway brand products excluding milk, meat & seafood, and deli products
-Breaks
-We play lots of Glee music over the speakers, but by the original artists
-My fellow employyes. Mostly
-I get to flirt with boys who have girlfriends -- no risk involved
-I get paid
-I'm in a union

Don't you love how the dislikes outweigh the likes. That tells you that this will not be a career path for me. Ever.
