This winter might not have been the worst thing the island had ever done--in fact, it seemed mostly harmless--but it was pretty annoying, at least as far as Sam was concerned. Mostly this was because of the clothes. It wasn't like Sam didn't like to dress up from time to time, because she did, but not like this, in dresses with tons of layers and ruffles and buttons and all that ridiculousness. Once she'd figured out that all her clothes were like this, including anything she got from the clothes box, she'd decided to just raid Jack's clothes instead, because although they were just as old-fashioned at least she could have just pants and shirts.
But there was the small matter of her steadily-rounding belly that thwarted that plan. At four months, she wasn't showing that much yet, but it was enough to notice and enough that Jack's clothes just weren't going to cut it. She'd said a few ugly words after trying the last pair of pants she could find, and it wasn't until William tugged on her skirt one day and said "pretty, Aunt Sam," that she resigned herself to being stuck in flouncy dresses for the next few weeks.
William's excitement over the snow and the strange new buildings was enough to distract her from her hatred of the dresses, though. The island change had freaked him out a little at first until Sam explained that all their favorite places were still there, it was just like the buildings and houses were playing a game of dress-up and they'd probably be back to their old selves in a few weeks. Once he got that in his head around that, he was fine and kept insisting he wanted to go out and play in the snow. So one afternoon she put on a warm dress and boots, and bundled up William as best she could (which was actually kind of fun, because his little clothes were cute and he didn't really seem to care) and took him out to find a good place to play in the snow.
