homeplot I [TR for Jack, dated Feb 26]

Feb 20, 2011 19:45

Sam was having a good dream. This was unusual for her, at least lately; she either didn't dream at all or had vague, unsettling dreams about losing the baby and fighting with Jack. But this one was very nice, although she couldn't make out much of it other than being in a warm, cozy bed under layers of quilts ( Read more... )

"Mmm. Merry Christmas to me," Jack said drowsily, tugging Sam a little so that she was half on top of him. It felt like snow was falling, which might have been a stupid thing to say but you didn't live in Minnesota and Colorado all your life without knowing what snow weather felt like.

"Sleep a little longer?"

"Yeah. More sleep." She was warm and comfy where she was, and snuggled up against him more comfortably, but she was hungry too, craving coffee and breakfast. So after a minute she rolled over and opened her eyes--and then sat straight up, holding the blanket to her chest.

"Jack," she said, prodding him in the shoulder. "Wake up and look at this."

"I thought we were sleeping," Jack said grumpily, burying himself beneath the pillows and blankets. "Not ready to get up yet, Carter. Retired now."

"No, really," Sam insisted, tugging at the blankets. "You need to see this. It isn't the island." There was a plaid robe hanging nearby, and she pulled it on, shivering a little as she peeked out the window.

"It's your cabin, Jack. We're at your cabin in Minnesota."

She'd never been there with snow on the ground, but she recognized it well enough. Instead of the cluster of New Atlantis huts outside the window, there were trees and snow and an iced-over pond she was pretty sure didn't have any fish in it.

Jack got up then, padding over to the window to peer out. Sure enough, it was his cabin with all his handmade furniture and a lot of snow. Tons of snow. Figures, he practically lived in Canada.

"Well, if it was gonna send us home, why here, you think?"

"I don't know." Sam was wary, not trusting anything that had anything to do with the island. She pulled the robe tighter around her and left the room, carefully checking the place out to make sure there weren't any nasty surprises lurking behind doors or in closets or anywhere else. After that mess with Fifth, she wasn't taking any chances.

"I'm not gonna question it," Jack said quietly, tugging on a shirt and padding out behind her. "Besides, I love this place. Did I ever bring you here? Later on, that is?"

Sam was still wary, and still questioning, even though she hdan't found anything unpleasant so far. Didn't mean it wasn't there. She didn't trust the island not to be playing some huge trick on them. "Before you left for Homeworld Security in Washington, you had all of us come up," she answered. "Me, Teal'c, and Daniel. It was summertime, and you told us there were no fish in your pond, but there actually were one or two."

"Yeah, I used to keep it stocked for Charlie," Jack said wistfully, gazing out over the frozen pond. "He knew what was up, though, but it was kind of our little secret. I didn't stock it anymore after...well. You know."

Sam nodded, knowing exactly what he meant. Finishing her inspection of the cabin and satisfied that for the moment, at least, there wasn't anything unpleasant waiting for them, she turned to Jack. "Well," she said cautiously. "We're here. What should we do?" For the moment, she didn't know if they were home-home, or if this was some kind of island trick, and she didn't want to let her guard down just yet.

"Breakfast?" Jack asked, shrugging a little and giving her a grin. "If this is my idea of heaven, I'm pretty sure we're going to have breakfast food laying around if nothing else."

Jack's mouth was already watering at the idea of eggs and thick-cut bacon, homemade hashbrowns and plenty of strong coffee. He was pretty easy to please.

"I'll cook."

For a minute, Sam thought about how Fifth-pretending-to-be-Pete had wanted her to sit down to breakfast with him. I'll make pancakes. She quickly pushed that thought away. "Want me to help?"

She was pretty sure this was really Jack, but she'd learned not to take anything to do with island shenanigans at face value.

"If you want," Jack said, grinning a little. "It might be fun, getting to putz around in the kitchen together. Um, you can slice potatoes for now and we'll see where it goes from there."

He wanted to embrace it and have fun with it, if he could, because he had no idea when the bottom was gonna fall out.

Sam got the potatoes, washed them off, and started to chop them up. She wasn't that great at cooking, but she could chop and slice.

"What do you think is going on?" she asked after a minute. "With this, I mean. Do you think we're home, or...?"

"Not sure," Jack admitted. "We'll investigate more later but I need coffee and a full stomach before I can even wrap my head around it. I wish it was home, but I suspect there's a catch."

There's always a catch, Sam thought, but she couldn't argue with the idea of food before figuring out what the hell was going on. She was already thinking, though, wondering what would happen if they were really back, though she did remember someone--Jennifer, maybe?--talking about how they supposedly went home once, only it wasn't home and they were back on the island all too soon.
