When Sam woke, way too early--it was still dark out--she just didn't feel quite right. She tried to brush it off as maybe just that the boar burger she'd had last night hadn't quite agreed with her, so she got up quietly, trying not to bother Jack, and went to sit up for a little while, wrapping up in a blanket even though it was pretty warm again now that the snow was gone. It didn't really help, and neither did going back to bed, so after a little while of laying there trying to get comfortable, she nudged Jack awake.
He was up and out the door to get Juliet almost as soon as she'd got the words out of her mouth.
Maybe it was nothing, she tried to tell herself in the few minutes that passed between the time that Jack left and the time he returned with Juliet, and she clung to the idea that this was just one of those things that cause a little panic and fuss but really turned out to be nothing at all. Juliet was very calm and steady, which made it easier to hold on to that idea, and she kept holding onto it even when Juliet suggested they go up to the clinic. Juliet wanted to do another ultrasound. It would give them a little better idea what was going on, and Sam agreed, even though what she really wanted to do--and wouldn't admit to wanting, because it made her feel very cowardly--was curl back in the bed with Jack and just stay there for a little while, waiting for things to get better.
The ultrasound seemed to take a little longer than the previous one had, and it wasn't until Juliet quietly informed them that there was no heartbeat that Sam realized what was really happening.
What had already happened.
Sam didn't hear very much of anything after that. She wanted to cry, and scream, and throw up, and none of those things were happening. She couldn't say anything. Juliet was talking to her, with her quiet, professional voice, but Sam wasn't really hearing any of it. She wanted Jack to say okay, campers, we're going to fix this, and here's how, and tell her it was going to be okay, but he wasn't doing that. Despite the fact that she couldn't make herself look at him, she could tell he was angry. This wasn't something either of them could fix. They were used to saving lives, not standing by helplessly while one ended.
But this time, there was nothing they could do.
