On The Countryside: Epilogue
notes → i wrote you an epilogue \o// obviously
Sungmin cried for an entire day, soaking every tissue Kyuhyun helplessly offered him. Kyuhyun had to change t-shirt twice, and his fingers were sore from massaging Sungmin's aching head for hours.
The gardener wanted to walk in his garden for the last time, and Kyuhyun had given him some time for himself. When he heard the uncontrollable sobs again, however, he wasn't slow to run to his side.
Whenever Sungmin felt down, Kyuhyun had figured, whenever Sungmin felt sad, he would be there. He would take care of him, like he deserved. It was new for him, but he was going to try. Or, not try, he internally argued, remembering Jungsu's words from one of their talks earlier. He was going to.
Sungmin had packed a bag with some belongings from his "home"; toothbrushes (yes, both of them), some clothes, a bottle of his favorite wine in which he had spared, his favorite teacup-but not one gardening tool.
"For me to fully move on, I don't think it's a good idea to take with me things that reminds me of the past."
Kyuhyun grabbed Sungmin by the wrist to prevent him from throwing his spade away.
"I disagree. I think that having these things maybe will remind you of what once happened, and what you don't want to happen again. Why don't you take that cute little pink flower pot with the white spots? The one you couldn't reach when you bought it?" Kyuhyun grinned at the end of the sentence, and Sungmin's ears flushed out of embarrassment.
"Shut up."
Kyuhyun snickered and went over to Sungmin's closet, looking for some clothes that he liked and probably could steal in the future. He found a nice plaid and a blue, printed t-shirt, tossing them over at Sungmin-("Hey! Watch where you throw them!")-when something inside Sungmin's closet caught his attention. Behind stacks of outwashed t-shirts and sweaters, there was a photo frame. Unsure if he was going to peek at it without telling Sungmin, or if that would be to intrude his privacy, he called out his name.
"Sungmin, can I ask you something?"
Sungmin appeared by his side, standing on his toes to peek over his shoulders.
"What?"
Kyuhyun pointed at the photo frame.
"What's that?"
The elder of the two stiffened noticeably and lowered himself so that he hid behind Kyuhyun's back. Two arms wrapped around Kyuhyun's waist, gripping tightly as if he was afraid that Kyuhyun would vanish in his hold.
"It's a photo. Of my family."
Kyuhyun tensed, turning in Sungmin's hold.
"Where are they?"
Sungmin lowered his head, looking dismissively to the side. Kyuhyun sighed and reached his hand out to cup his face, tickling the skin under his ears.
"Sungmin, please."
Sungmin's shoulders sunk in resignation. "I haven't spoken to them in over five years. My mother's deceased. I'm afraid they'll blame me... I'm afraid they won't talk to me. I don't even know if they live where they used to five years ago."
"We should visit them," was Kyuhyun's instant reply, in which Sungmin widened his eyes.
"Kyuhyun, no! We can't!"
Kyuhyun widened his eyes adorably, feigning ignorance. "Why not?"
Sungmin curled his fingers around the fabric of Kyuhyun's (borrowed) t-shirt, sealing his lips shut.
"Hey... I'm not forcing you, you know that? It just could be the next step to move on and start a new life. I'm here, standing by your side. You have me as support. And I have faith in you. You can do this," Kyuhyun said, stroking Sungmin's shoulder soothingly with his thumb. Sungmin tried to straighten out the smile that creeped upon his lips, but it was too late; Kyuhyun had already seen it, and thus leaned in for a peck on the lips. The touch of lips were feathery, however not any less desirable, and Sungmin unconsciously leaned in for more. But Kyuhyun turned his head away.
"We should finish packing," he said hurriedly, smiling adoringly at the other if not a bit apologetic. But Sungmin understood. He wouldn't be able to control himself either.
"Yeah, we should."
When Sungmin moved away from the closet, Kyuhyun stayed for a moment, looking at the photo frame thoughtfully. Sungmin had made no move to take it with him, but Kyuhyun figured he probably wouldn't want to leave it here to rot either. Therefore he secretly smugled the photo under his t-shirt and made a run for it. Not a graceful move, but Sungmin was clueless when Kyuhyun came back with a goofy grin-and that's what mattered. He would help Sungmin reconcile with his family again. It was a promise.

The apartment in Seoul was dusty and cold, and a foreign air was hanging, loaded with uncertainty of the future. But the shared grins between the two men held anticipation, and the intertwined fingers held trust. Trust that they could make it work. Trust that they could rely on each other, through any weather, through any hardships that they may encounter. The drop of Sungmin's bag and the sound that followed ensured them that this was real-they had made it so far, even though it had been turbulent. Sungmin even proceeded with pinching his arm, but Kyuhyun brushed it away.
"This is real," he assured, voice gentle. "You're not dreaming. Although it feels like a dream for me too."
Sungmin looked lost for a second, taking in the environment with huge eyes. Kyuhyun looked at Sungmin only, heart pounding when a small slowly formed on his Sungmin's lips, eyes finally flickering to life.
"A new start," Sungmin whispered, smile turning into a lasting grin by the sound and the feel of the words. Kyuhyun leaned forward to kiss him on the cheek before heading to the kitchen. Sungmin stayed put, watching Kyuhyun's back as he opened the closets and brought out two mugs.
"Would you like a cup of tea?"
the end. (for good ; ^;)
