Conversation I Had In Panera Today
Backstory: I've just finished reading Sena Jeter Naslund's Abundance - A Novel of Marie Antionette. I have spoken with one of the fellows at Panera about it for the last couple of days.
Me: I finished that book. They EXECUTED her!
Rich (the Panera fellow): No! Did she at least get cake?
Me: You know she didn't say that. She was much-maligned, but she really loved the people and tried to help them.
Rich: You know, the 1st Estate received about 70% of the country's revenue...
Me: But that wasn't Louis XVI's fault. He worked for reform, but the nobility wouldn't cooperate on the tax issue.
Some other Panera fellow who just walked up: Are you talking about The French Revolution?
Me: Yes. It's always relevant...
