Matt comes over as promised and he brings donuts with him. He charms the socks off of Nathan’s mom before they disappear upstairs into Nathan’s room, bringing the donuts with them.

“We need to talk,” Matt says.

Nathan picks up a donut. “If you’re going to tell me this isn’t going to work then you can leave the donuts and get out.”

Matt just laughs and picks the sprinkles off a donut. “I told my mom about us.”

Nathan almost chokes on his food. “You what?”

“I couldn’t not tell her,” Matt replies and finally leaves the sprinkles alone. “She was mad but I guess she’s okay with it.”

Nathan finishes his donut. “What does that mean? You telling her?”

For a long time Matt doesn’t say anything. He just eats his sprinkle-less donut and looks around the room. “My mom was angry because she thought I was stringing Annie along this whole time and I don’t think I was. I liked Annie, I still do, and we had fun together but it never felt right. And I don’t know if it feels right with you, not yet at least, but I want to try. My mom was shocked but as long as she doesn’t find out we’re having sex she’s fine with us being together.”

“Are we going to have sex?” Nathan asks, cheeks red. He knows what sex’s supposed to be like between two dudes because he’s curious and has internet access and the thought of having sex with Matt makes him feel hot all over but he’s not ready for that, not yet.

“Maybe?” Matt replies, cheeks flushed red. “I guess we’ll get to that point… later.”

Nathan nods and moves the box of donuts to the floor. Matt crawls up the bed until he’s lying shoulder to shoulder with Nathan. Nathan scoots down a little bit until his head can rest on Matt’s shoulder. “I’ll talk to my mom.”

Matt hums his acknowledgement. They spend the rest of the day doing the normal things they do - playing Halo on the Xbox and watching movies until Matt has to leave and Nathan has study for exams. They hang out in the hall for a couple of seconds, the rest of Nathan’s family in the kitchen getting ready for dinner, and Nathan leans up and kisses Matt.

“I’ll get you guys from school tomorrow,” Matt says after they kiss and Nathan’s mom calls for him to hurry up and say goodbye. Nathan just nods and then leans against the door when Matt leaves.

“Spill,” Conor says the next morning right before their World Geography exam. Nathan’s ready for the exam but Conor’s trying to cram the entire map of Europe into his head.

“Matt’s picking us up today,” is all Nathan replies. He sharpens his pencil and makes sure he has a spare eraser on hand. Conor looks up from studying Western Europe to glare.

“Spill,” he repeats and pokes Nathan with his pencil.

“Matt told his mom about us so I guess we’re official,” Nathan replies and feels like a girl saying official. Conor grins and knocks their shoulders together.

Conor must have managed to somehow text Ricky the news during the exam because when Nathan shows up for Earth Science Ricky’s already secured them a spot in the very back. “I would really appreciate it if you decided to fill me in on your life,” he says as Nathan sits down.

“Conor beat me to it!” Nathan protests. He’s not ready for this final and hopes Ricky will take pity on him and allow him to share the one notecard cheat sheet their teacher is letting them have.

Ricky just raises his eyebrow and grins. “Congrats bro,” he says. “You have a boyfriend.” He whispers the last part because they’re surrounded by gossipy gossipers. Nathan’s not ashamed of being bi but that doesn’t mean the entire school needs to know.

Ricky does take pity on him and allows Nathan to share his cheat sheet. After the last bell rings they find Conor outside of his World History class. “Totally failed,” he says in way of greeting. They shuffle out of the class and out to the parking lot where they find Matt waiting in his usual parking spot.

“So,” Conor says. “I want a giant thank you segment at your wedding about how I got you two together.”

Matt snorts. “I’ll make sure to remember that.”

Conor grins and sits back in his seat. He manages to convince Matt to take them all to Subway where he pulls his I am the son of the Greatest Olympian of All Time card to get them all free subs.

Nathan doesn’t mean to put it off but it takes him a long time to build up the courage to tell his mom. It’s two weeks after finals are over and he’s spending all his time between the pool and his friends plus Matt. He feels guilty whenever he goes over to Matt’s house and Mrs Grevers doesn’t even bat an eyelash when she catches them on the rare times they’re actually holding hands and being a couple.

On a Monday morning he treks downstairs and finds his mom in the kitchen.

“I need to tell you something,” Nathan says. His mom lifts her head from where she’s cutting coupons, glasses balanced on the end of her nose. She puts her scissors down and pats the seat next to her.

“Out with it,” she says when Nathan sits down. Nathan loves his mom; she’s a no nonsense type of woman, but still very loving.

“I, um,” Nathan starts and fiddles his thumbs. “I’m with Matt.”

His mom looks at him, confused. Nathan adds, “I’m dating Matt.”

“Oh,” his mother says. She looks at him, hard, concentrating before she says, “I thought so.”

Nathan feels flabbergasted. “You thought so?”

Cecilia nods and picks up a stack of coupons to cut. “I saw you two kiss.”

“When?” Nathan asks because he made sure that he and Matt never made out when his mom was around.

“A few weeks ago, when you were sick,” she says and goes back to cutting out her coupons. “I was just waiting for you to tell me.”

Nathan goes back to fiddling his thumbs. His mom pushes a leaflet from Kmart towards him and he flips it open looking for coupons to cut out. “You’re okay with it?”

“Okay with what?” His mom asks. “With you dating Matt or with you being gay?”

“I like girls too,” Nathan says, weakly. He digs into a drawer behind him and pulls out another pair of scissors. “I still think Natalie Coughlin is hot.”

“You’re my son,” is all his mother says. “As long as you’re happy then I’m happy.”

Nathan sighs a breath of relief. Beside him his mom smiles and squeezes his leg. “No funny business in my house, Nathan.”

Nathan doesn’t want to talk to his mom about sex so he nods his head and starts to cut coupons. “No funny business,” he promises when she squeezes his leg harder than necessary. “I promise.”

They sit in silence for a while, just cutting coupons.

Being with Matt is just normal.

They don’t hold hands all the time or act all couple-y. Instead they just do normal friend things like go to practice together and play video games and just dick around, except sometimes they make out.

It doesn’t take long for the news to spread to the swim team. Annie looks like she either wants to drown herself or them and Natalie Coughlin just kind of tilts her head and says, “oh… oh.” Tyler Clary says shit because he’s Tyler Clary and Ricky “accidentally” throws a medicine ball at his head.

“Really,” Conor says after Annie’s basically chewed their heads off to help herself finally come to terms with the break up. “You two have been in love since first grade. You’d think these people would have seen it coming.”

Nathan can’t say he’s in love with Matt, but it’s nice and easy. Nathan knows it can’t stay that way for forever because Matt has to leave for college in August, but for a couple of months they can just be together.

Making out becomes Nathan’s favorite past time. He didn’t know how much fun it could be until the opportunity came about for him to do it almost every day. He and Matt don’t go any further than making out besides an embarrassing moment when Nathan comes in his pants rutting against Matt’s thigh and gives him a handjob to say sorry.

“Shit,” Nathan says, so embarrassed. “Oh my fucking god.”

He tries to bury his face in a pillow but Matt just does this gruff laugh thing and says, “That was hot.”

Nathan looks at him, ready to punch Matt in the shoulder for making fun of him, but Matt’s eyes are blown wide. When he shifts Nathan can feel his hard-on against his thigh and he makes a stuttering noise just at the feel of it. He knows proper etiquette is to return the favor even though Matt didn’t technically do anything but suck on his tongue.

Matt’s wearing basketball shorts and it makes it easy for Nathan to slip his hand into Matt’s underwear and wrap his fingers around his cock. Matt moans and thrusts his hips up, sliding his cock in Nathan’s grip. “Fuck,” he says, and not for the first time that day Nathan’s thankful that Matt’s parents aren’t home. “Fuck,” Matt repeats when Nathan starts to move his hand.

He’s never given a handjob before so he does what he knows feels good for him; he runs his thumb over the head and keep his hand in a tight fist as Matt moves his hips. It feels weird to hold another dude’s dick but Nathan can feel his own cock twitching in his underwear, getting uncomfortable where his come is starting to dry. When Matt comes he buries his face in Nathan’s neck and makes a noise that makes Nathan gasp.

Nathan gives it a few seconds before he withdraws his hand and then makes a face. Matt laughs and sits up, pulling his shorts back over his hips. “Here,” he says and hands Nathan a dirty towel off the floor. Nathan wipes his hand before discarding the towel.

“Do you want to borrow some shorts?” Matt asks and looks down at Nathan’s lap. Nathan numbly nods because he can feel himself starting to get hard again and having Matt’s eyes on his crotch is making it hard to make his hard-on go away.

When Matt hands him the shorts Nathan isn’t sure what to do. He’s grown up changing around other guys before, including Matt, but now that they’re dating it feels kind of weird. But Nathan just had Matt’s dick in his hand and he’s sure (hopeful) by the end of the year that they’ll do more than hump and jack each other off. He scurries out of his jeans and pulls on the shorts before he can second guess himself.

Nathan forgets all about his jeans when he gets home that day. If his mom notices she doesn’t say anything but three days later when Matt comes over with Ricky and Conor to play video games he awkwardly hands Nathan his jeans and says in a whisper, “My mom made me watch SVU episodes about statutory rape. We need to be more careful.”

Ricky snickers because he’s a bastard with super hearing. Nathan flicks him off before his mom can see. “Okay,” he says and tries to hide his embarrassment but struggles to hide how excited he is that Matt’s implying that there could be a next time.

When August rolls around Nathan starts to count down the days until Matt has to leave. They have until the 23rd which gives them less than a month to do whatever couples are supposed to do before one of them has to leave. They spend most of the month hanging with their friends and swimming and not talking about what’s going to happen on the 23rd.

On the 20th they go to the annual Phelps-Lochte end of summer Labor Day cookout that’s been pushed forward a week for Matt. Matt’s lounging in a pool chair even though Conor’s family doesn’t own a pool and Nathan’s lounging half on top of him and half on the chair.

“Hey,” he says and looks across the backyard to where Ryan and Mike are playfully arguing over the grill while Conor tries to balance a plate of chicken and a plate of uncooked burgers. “Do you think we could be the next power couple of swimming?”

“Uh?” Matt asks and sits up a little bit, unbalancing Nathan. Nathan repositions himself and continues, “Like what if we both went to the Olympics? And we became the next power couple of swimming except without the whole hiding our relationship for the better part of ten years.”

Matt snorts. “Do we have to win a shit ton of medals? Because I think Mike would be pretty pissed if we stole his thunder.”

“His thunder died a long time ago,” Nathan replies with a grin. As if knowing he’s being talked about Mike looks up at them and smiles before he gets the grill going. Nathan’s dad steps forward to help and Ryan disappears back into the house with Conor’s Uncle Cullen still leaving Conor to balance both plates.

“We have to adopt a lot of babies,” Matt says. “If we’re going to be the next power couple we have to outdo Mike and Ryan as much as we can.”

“Okay,” Nathan nods and can’t stop smiling. “Do you think we’re going to make it that far?”

Matt’s silent. “Let’s take it month by month,” he finally says. Nathan feels himself frowning. He’s not expecting forever with Matt and he was mostly joking but it still feels like a sting.

“We’ve basically been dating since we were babies Nate,” Matt says and wraps an arm around Nathan’s waist. “I’m sure it’ll work out.”

“Yeah,” Nathan agrees and can’t help but smile.
