Speaking of oldies...

Having donated to "The Wrecking Crew" movie, I am on their mailing list (if you've not seen that movie, and if you are a fan of music of the 50s-60s-70s, do see the movie).  They are compiling another set of CDs featuring music that included The Wrecking Crew.  They released the current list of songs, and about half the list trips my trigger.  One song in particular (which I already have) is among my all-time favorites, and was recorded by one of my all-time favorite groups:  "One Less Bell to Answer" by the Fifth Dimension.  I could listen to their music all day.

I was in college when that song came out.  As I've said here before, I tend to listen more to the melody than to the lyrics, and that was originally true with this song, too, although over time I've more carefully listened to Marilyn McCoo singing those lyrics.

At our college radio station, which was fed only to the dorms (not on the air but rather through the wires) we had pretty free reign over what was said and played.  However, one announcer took a little extra liberty with a comment after playing "One Less Bell..."  By today's standards it would be nothing, but in the early 70s that got him, and the station, into a little trouble.  His comment was roughly: "They'll have one less egg to fry at the dorm cafeteria because I ain't eating there anymore!"

Not exactly a Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake FCC moment, but someone in University Administration apparently heard the comment (or was told about it) and called the deejay to explain himself.  Being on the board of the station, I was also pulled into the fray.  We had no license to lose but were given sufficient heat to issue an apology.  Sheesh.  (Last I heard, the announcer was doing a successful radio career in Ohio.)

And, for the record, I disagreed with him.  I kinda liked dorm food, particularly the wide variety -- that is, until they substituted "textured soy protein" for real meat.

Sigh.  What a gentle, wonderful song to cause such a ruckus.
