she came back from thailand with a crack pipe in her bag
she slipped it past security and quickly hailed a cab
she's looking kind of strung out but she says "i can't complain"
she got back to 23rd street and got pinned down by the rain

we went out drinking when she got back to town
out on abandoned highways, out in bars and out of luck
we were cruising out on madison when she started breaking down
she was crying in the car, she was mired down in muck

she says "i've got nothing left but beer cans,
all my dreams have been deferred"
she's praying for salvation
but all the words, they come out slurred

we filled our time with happy hours, evening drives, and midnight movies
she was into evil dead, she says bruce campbell's kinda groovy
but all those nights at the egyptian couldn't give her what she craved
the popcorn tasted like the desert, and every pyramid's a grave

it's the age of disillusion, she's dying to believe
but there's nothing left to cling to, it's all been proven wrong
i was reading her some milton when she said she had to leave
she said "i've got nothing against satan but i've been awake for way too long"

on the 48 she's sobbing,
not caring if she's heard
she's praying for salvation,
but all the words, they come out slurred
