The raccoon in our backyard began digging his claws in. I cried out, "Hey! Get your claws out of there. That's not your sod!, that's our sod." And he backed off, and we made eye contact for a few chilling seconds, his eyes flashing blue and orange in the porch light. He returned to the grass, no longer digging around. He sought out the seams, the rows we did our damnedest to hide, where the sheets of pre-grown grass disconnect from each other. Using his nose and his paws he picked them out, one by one, looking more confused than inquisitive. Once his task was done he circled back right into the center and rolled onto his back, watching me as he stretched and licked his thighs.
