Almost a year ago I read Sabriel for the fist time, thanks to the rec of a friend, and I just couldnt stop till Abhorsen and Across the Wall a bit later. I recommend Shade's Children, because it's my absolute favorite.
Keys to the Kingdom is what he's doing now, and we've got up to Friday so far, so there's still two more of those to come out. It's pretty good. It's the first thing of his I read.
And don't let The Seventh Tower put you off if you find one of them and it's teeny, they're actually really good..I just had trouble finding them all. I know in the US they have them in two volumes now, instead of six.

Shade's children would be a good way to venture forth.
I wish there were more Abhorsen books because I love his style and the story of the Old Kingdom.
I also have the Ragwitch and I really like that one, and if you have problems hunting down the Seventh Tower Amazon's Marketplace is a good place to find them.

And enjoy Shade's Children, I love reading books for the first time and falling in love, I just read although its not Garth Nix, Trudi Caravan's White Priestess that I bought months ago and enjoyed it a lot.
