TM-164: What Are You Waiting For?

What are you waiting for?

Hank McCoy is waiting for the appropriate time to give his speech.

He hasn’t prepared much-just a few words, most of which were given to him by Jean. But the more he listens to the various speeches, the more he feels himself itching in his seat to give his own. Some of the speeches have, of course, been fantastic. Read more... )

I appreciate the vote of confidence, Jean, Hank sends back.

He steps up to the podium, holding a few papers in his hands. The crowd looks up with some amount of interest, though some still look dazed from Doom’s speech.

“Well,” Hank begins, a disarming smile on his face. “That was certainly something, wasn’t it?” He hears a few polite laughs from the audience.

“It seems we’ve been challenged - by both Tony Stark and Dr. Doom, and who would have thought they’d ever have more in common than metal armor? - to find some real solutions to the problems we’ve been discussing. And that is why I’m standing before you now.

“As most of you know, my name is Henry McCoy, and I’ve been a member of both the Avengers and the X-Men. And I will be the first to tell you that I, personally, do not have any more solutions to the problem of mutant persecution than any of my esteemed colleagues who have spoken previously.” He nods his head to Scott, in the crowd; Captain America seems to have disappeared. “But, luckily for these assembled masses, and luckily for, I would say without hyperbole, the entire world at large, a dear friend of mine does have a solution. Unfortunately, Ms. Jean Grey is currently otherwise occupied, so you will all have to bear with my less-appealing countenance to recount her vision. My apologies.” There is more laughter; people seem to have warmed up to the speech.

“In the wake of the Genosha massacre, Jean Grey, along with Professor Charles Xavier, founded a group known as the X-Corporation. Unlike the X-Men, who have always fought valiantly, but usually only in the service of self-defense and the preservation of the delicate status quo, they viewed X-Corps as a global aid organization, a worldwide network of people working toward both mutant-human cooperation and mutant interests in general. When the X-Men are off fighting supervillains, and trying to save the world, little time is left for constructive efforts toward particular political and human rights goals. Therefore, X-Corp was created to fill that void.

“With its substantial endowment, X-Corps was able to create schools worldwide for integrated mutant and human students, provide relief in the wake of powers-related disasters, work for economic equality for mutants, and establish the first ever Department of Mutant Studies at Oxford University, a move that led to the creation of similar departments in many other institutes of higher learning across the globe.

“Unfortunately, circumstances, including, most notably, the sharp decrease in the mutant population following the event known as M-Day, brought an end to most of X-Corps’ efforts. But mutant concerns did not disappear with the Decimation. Nor did the former mutants find themselves completely safe and secure as soon as their powers vanished. Just recently, riots in Paris led to the deaths of dozens of former mutants at the hands of anti-mutant bigots.

“Therefore, Jean Grey has decided to reinvigorate X-Corps, in an effort to - and let me quote her directly on this - ‘show the world that mutants are part of a vibrant global culture, not defined strictly by powers or even by genetic code, that depowered mutants have not been forgotten, and that Xavier's dream provides a viable alternative to Magneto's fruitless displays of violence.’

“Jean Grey is a remarkable woman, and I have every faith that she will achieve the goals she has set out to achieve. I only hope that all of you can see the concrete hope that lies in her plans, and help her, in whatever way you can, to accomplish them. If you’d like you get involved, please find me after this speech; I’ll be holding a stack of informational pamphlets, complete with contact information.

Hank looks down at his notes. He’s fairly certain he’s said all he needs to say. He only hopes that it will have some effect.

“Thank you,” he says, and he steps down from the podium.

[OOC: All credit to shade_of_grey for providing me with the info on X-Corps’ plans, and much of the eloquent language.]

Oh, that's perfect. And am flattered to see my cold-medicine induced ramblings distinguished as eloquent. Also, you might note, that Cable ended up using much the same language to hint to Mystique that Jean might be willing to help KILL Magneto. *shakes head*

Thank you! I was as worried as Hank that I wouldn't do justice to your ideas (cold-medicine induced or not).

The Summers-Grey family has a pretty unique set of moral codes, doesn't it?

I've rejected violence as a means of social change.

But talk to my mom!
