title: Dustland Fairytale
fandom: Newsies (1992)
song: A Dustland Fairytale by The Killers
warnings: some minor violence, police brutality
summary: It's a fairytale beginning when Jack and David meet. But soon enough the newsies' strike is under siege and Jack has to figure out how to be the hero the newsies need.

This is for my roommate. I'm so proud of her political activism, and so thankful to have her in my life.

This is another vid that I've had brewing for years. I think the lyrics in the song, Cinderella don't you go to sleep / it's such a bitter form of refuge / don't you know the kingdom's under siege / and everybody needs you were the first to "ping" as a Newsies' parallel: I pictured the scene where Jack agrees to become a scab to protect David.

The lyrics of A Dustland Fairytale are detailed and specific, so it forced me to be less literal in my vidding, which is probably a good thing. Even so, most of the lyric/footage parallels made sense in my head, as long as you can roll with the idea that Jack is Cinderella (but also the slick Chrome American prince).

I really do believe Newsies is an underrated film. Especially if you're pro-union and enjoy musicals. It simplifies a lot of things about labor strikes, but it does a pretty great job of showing how people in powerful positions across society can work together to keep power in their hands and out of the hands of the poor and disenfranchised. And some of the songs are super catchy. And Jack and David are so in love.

This is my first vid made in Premiere Pro CC! All my previous ones were made in iMovie, and although the learning curve was steep, the features made the transition well worth it. My biggest issue was with lagging playback within Premiere Pro, and this was mostly fixed by rendering each clip as I placed it on my timeline. I also had issues with a corrupted file, but that wasn't Premiere Pro's fault. So overall I had a great experience with the software.

And I think that's it! I hope you enjoyed the vid!
