My father? What is there to say about Harry? He traveled… a lot. Yeah right, I bought that excuse when I was little but when he stopped coming home it was harder for Mom to convince me that he was working, off on a gig. He played jazz sax in different bands and he was amazing, when he wasn’t playing the ponies.
He abandoned us when I was a kid, to be a con man, a lousy grifter. He never sent money so we spent quite a bit of time dodging bill collectors. I finally cleared up my mother’s credit about six years before she died.
I remember he bought me a comic book when I was little; Batman issue number one and the damned thing disappeared when he needed money for the track. I finally got it back a couple of years ago; of course, he used the money I gave him to buy a suit and a gift for Abby because he wanted to look nice and have something to give her when he had dinner with us. He never showed, no big surprise, like every other time I counted on him, he let me down, but then that’s Harry, the amazing disappearing/reappearing deadbeat grifter dad.
But then again how am I different, I abandoned Maggie and Abby in favor of my job too. The only difference being Harry left completely, I pretended to be there by coming home each night. On the outside, I look like a success but look deeper and you’ll see a deadbeat husband and father who never emotionally supported his family, who eviscerated his daughter’s self-esteem and refused to allow her to be herself because it didn’t fit his image.
So, you choose, who gets the award for lousy father of the century, Harry Daniel Macy, grifter and thief or Garret Daniel Macy, drunk and emotional eunuch.
