I would have to say the mood for this piece is very mixed, I am proud, happy, sad, reflective and the list goes on. The song should be Amazing Grace on the bagpipes.
On July 20,2005, a beautiful soul left this plane of existence and moved along the karmic wheel. I was privileged to have met this person on numerous occasions and knew him rather well. I am speaking of James Doohan who portrayed Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott on Star Trek and in several Star Trek movies as well as guest appearances on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
This gentle soul touched my life long before I met him and became a friend who even though our meetings were spaced far too infrequently always remembered my name and my mother's. I wrote this the day of his death and then promptly lost it under an incorrect title after it was pulled from fanfiction.net. I found it today and the memories it evoked were still bittersweet.
I feel at times as if we never lost him and at others as though it has been years since he was with us. Jimmy, I am proud to have been able to call you a friend and to have shared time with you. I will never forget you or the lessons you taught me.
EULOGY FOR THE CHIEF ENGINEER
Goodbye old friend. You pulled off miracles in one fourth the time; saved the ship and crew from certain death and made us believe that the future could be a place where we were finally learning to work together. You swore the engines couldna take anymore and in repairing them in the nick of time taught us how to persevere in the face of daunting odds. You helped to power the vehicle that first took a generation’s imagination beyond the moon and to the stars.
Your service during a very dark time in our history was of greater importance than your work on the screen. Through it you showed us the path of bravery is not walked in the public eye to the cheers of adoring fans, but in the company of other souls who dared the journey to secure the freedom and prosperity we enjoy today.
Your wit and charm were shared with millions at gatherings that you were first among your fellows to attempt to understand and then embrace. Your time was not just shared with the fans from the stage but with individuals before and after. Your dignity was exceeded only by your love of a good joke and your laugh was warmer than the intermix chamber at warp 10. You allowed us to adore you for an acting role from a lifetime ago and we came to love you for a lifetime of giving and sharing.
Farewell, Jimmy.
Mr. Scott one to beam up.
