BACKGROUND:
Kamina had a not-so-normal childhood. Born in Boulder City, Nevada, his mother died when he was young, and his father had always boasted about going on travels to different states and countries. But each time the boy was offered to follow, he refused. Then one day his father decided it was time to move on and left Kamina at the orphanage to go on his own travels, never to be heard from again.
Over time Kamina began to regret not following his father, so as he grew older he devised ways to break out of the orphanage to go on his own journey. He wouldn’t follow his father’s exact footsteps, but that seed for adventure had been planted and was growing. Fast. It wasn’t long before he changed from the shy boy to the loud, boisterous teen he was known as.
Later on he met Simon at the orphanage. He had been reminded of how he had been when he was a younger boy, but he also could see Simon’s true strength and potential the boy had, even believing that Simon was stronger than him. Without any other real reason, he befriended the young boy and took him under his wing to help him realize that. Since then, Kamina led them on a series of hijinks - like pulling pranks on the foster workers and even making several attempts to escape. Of course they were unsuccessful. But no matter what, he always helped Simon and tried to bolster his courage.
Eventually, a young girl named Yoko joined their orphanage and a bond was quickly formed between the three of them. Though he tended to pick on her, he did develop a crush on her that was mutual. And was a pervert about it, but that’s just how Kamina was. However, just as their relationship was starting to really develop, he was taken to foster care. He wasn’t really too keen about it, especially since he would be leaving Simon and Yoko behind. However, he knew they would be safe and that Simon would be able to take care of them, so he left with a smile, saying they would meet again and that he’d find them. Just before he left, he pulled Yoko to the side to promise her that he’d find her again. She gives him a surprise kiss in return, which kind of shocked him a bit. But he then just grinned and told her when they met again, he would return the kiss ten times over.
Kamina didn’t stay long in the foster care. In fact he literally left it and went to join a few street gangs and hit it out on his own. During this time he got into a few brawls, proving his ability to fight and stand on his own. One night he noticed thugs beating up on some weaker kids, kids whom reminded him of Simon. Well there was only one thing to do, and it wasn’t to yell for help. He beat the shit out of them. After giving the other kids his usual words and speech of encouragement, he started helping people out (with his fists) and soon word of his acts spread through the backstreets.
Eventually he would form his own gang called the Gurren Dan, acquiring a nodachi, or katana like sword. He really used it more for show, but he could use it. They were very much the tough, rugged, underground gang, but it was always to help people. He would also eventually learn what became of his father. In fact he had died in a car crash before even leaving the Nevada state border. Though he grieved, he also vowed to go beyond his father and succeed where he had failed. It was then when he was given his father’s jacket.
Things were going well - his group was well known to the underground and they kept getting and stronger and bigger. In fact he considered renaming the group until one fight found him fighting against some mutants. Though he put up a strong battle, he was critically wounded (it was a cheap shot from the back, too). But he wouldn’t die. He couldn’t. He knew he still had to reunite with Simon and Yoko, and if he did have to go down, he was bringing those bastards with him. He wasn’t going to lose. Using everything he had, he awakened his own mutant powers to convert that boundless amount of fiery manly spirit energy to help give him strength and released it with a bang. He defeated the group on his own, though he later fell to the ground unconscious.
Fortunately one of Professor Xavier agents found him and he was quickly taken care of. He also learned what his powers were: spiral energy. It was like chi, but it was more unique to him. He was later trained in how to harness the power to his advantage, though he usually used as a secondary power source. A certain someone was already at the Institute, and he quickly applied to be a teacher. As fun as it would be to be a student, sitting in classes and listening to teachers - even if they were mutants - was just not his thing. Besides, in a place like that? Some cool teachers were in order. Or so he believed, anyway. But regardless, even though he had enjoyed his independence and own self-sought adventures, it just wasn't the same without his friends. It was time for a reunion and to continue where he left off.
PERSONALITY:
Kamina is overconfident, arrogant, loud, and stupid. HOWEVER, he is very passionate about his goals and beliefs, and he believes in people, people that he trusts at least. He will more than once let his life literally be at the hands of those who are close to (Simon in particular). He is also a good leader. It’s not unusual for him to take charge or debate with other team members about how to handle a situation. While his own actions may seem rash, there is usually (though not always) reason to them. He will put himself on the frontlines and make sure everyone else is safe. In essence, he’s acting as the “tank” or “bait” so that the enemies can focus on him and everyone else does their part. And he trusts that they will. If not, he will pick up the slack.
One of his most often quoted catchphrases is “Believe in me who believes in you”, which reflects this train of thought. In essence, it’s a cycle of trust. So long as someone believes in him, then that person can also believes in him/herself as Kamina is believing in them. Past that, my brain starts to explode.
He is pretty much 99.9% positive energy. And he has plenty of it to spare. He’s a fun-loving, party type guy, willing to give his support, and though he doesn’t show it, he can be serious when he’s out alone and thinking about what needs to be done. Still, he’s definitely one for the overdramatic speeches, never hesitates, and just pushes on forward (like literally. He would never back down when a sane person would and just plows through danger like it’s a field of wheat or something). Another one of his catchphrases: “Who the hell you think I am?!”
He also doesn’t like authority much, especially when there is any sort of unreasonable restriction. He prefers his freedom and independence. But basically, he has a sort of loud older brother lookin’ over you leader personality.
Kamina will still charge in by himself at times and can be pretty reckless. As he prefers ACTION over THINKING, it takes a bit for someone to reason with him, particularly if he’s stubborn and adamant about doing something a certain way (read: HIS way). However, he isn’t narrow-minded, either. He’ll listen to others and if he finds their opinions useful will implement the ideas.
So long as it keeps them moving forward and has a bang to it, Kamina will be all over it.

If there’s no time to think, no problem. Kamina will just keep moving and can be pretty quick to think on his feet.
Another thing of note is that while Kamina can be a bully himself at times, he doesn’t like it when others are being pushed around, especially those who could stand up for themselves. So he will be more than willing to boost up someone’s confidence and help them around. This in turn means he hates those who try to push their power on someone else or take advantage of them.
One final thing: HE IS LOUD. AND HAS A FIERY SPIRIT OF AWESOME. Or at least that’s what he likes to say/portray himself to have.
APPEARANCE:
Kamina likes to dress, well, ruggedly. He doesn’t wear a shirt. But he does where a well-worn, slightly frayed, dark crimson denim vest. It looks more like a jacket with the sleeves ripped off. …In fact that may have happened. It also has orange flames all around the edges and the Gurren dan symbol on the back: a fiery red flaming skull with the sunglasses (basically it’s his canon cape converted to something more “normal” so he can wear it all the time and not get called off as some Superman poser or something). Moving along, he also wears dark blue jeans that look like they’ve seen better days. And sandals. He also wears his trademark orange sunglasses. How they stay on, no one knows.
He has a very strong and well toned physical physique. He’s no Hulk or anything like that, but one glance makes it obvious that he works out in the gym every day. And that short crop of blue hair? It’s natural. Not dyed. Last thing of note are his tattoos. Yes they’re real. They’re blue and all over his upper body. They kind of a spiral/circular pattern, and there’s a flame on his back.
POWERS:
Kamina is already naturally strong, but he doesn’t have superhuman strength. Instead, his real power is the power of gar the use of chi, or life energy. In his case it’s spiral energy. His philosophy is, the more spirit you have, the bigger the force can become. Normally he just uses his brute strength, but he can also fire a few energy blasts. He normally can keep it in control, but if he gets too excited or worked up during a fight, it can sometimes go into overdrive. If he uses it too much, it can also wear him out. There’s a limit to everything, and even he knows that, fortunately. …Not that that stops him from going over the limit.
He’s also handy with long weapons like swords but that’s not really a power. I was tempted to have him actually have an energy sword, but that would be pushing it, so scratch that. Really he prefers using his raw strength over his actual mutant powers, but they are definitely awesome pluses and help enhance his abilities.
