Refugees. Gender. Women. Sexual assault. Rape. Drunken conversations with Clare + PoliSci 383 = ponderment. Kenya? Refugees in Kenya? Independent Study Project? Do I hear bells ringing? Oh, this is in one of my readings! Kenyan laws on rape--medical record, legal record, making it public in essence--clashing with Somalian customs on how to deal with rape--payment from rapist's family, keeping it quiet b/c it is shameful. connect it to the program, slanders. Um... Development, health, and society. connection:

shit. midterm! think midterm! MID . TERM!

2 hours later...
I feel like magic markers and bags of candy. That is what I do instead of midterms. Because it makes me happy. I probably seem like a crazed stalker, but I love my markers and chocolate rounds. *sigh* i can't b/c of the vow of silence, but i feel like talking to someone. or... like taking the clock back to midnight last night. damn skilled migration.

6:20 and more on Kenya...
So I really like the research starting point I've got going Women Victims of Violence was a program starting for Somali refugees in Kenya and was not successful, in my eyes, b/c of the lack of transcultural understanding. But it was in 1992. So I can't really research that. But I googled it and am coming up with really interesting stuff. You know, I don't like that they named that UNHCR project Women Victims of Violence. I mean, they are victims, but at the same time I think that naming it that does not help solve the cultural issue that made the project fail... Rape is not a health issue, not really. It'd be a stretch to use that as my ISP. No no. Wait. Violence against women can spread HIV. Progress against HIV requires that women be able to protect themselves from violence. Aaaand HIV can also cause more violence b/c HIV+ women suffer violence when their status is discovered. Women are more likely to get the virus through sex, especially if they are young women and especially if they suffered violence... Oh my gosh. I found my ISP. I wish I had taken ANTH 260 before applying to study abroad. But it wasn't offered this yr and isn't offered next semester. Anyway, I'm free this July and August so I can read then if I do get in. Wow. I'm actually very excited about this. I don't know how the hell I'll conduct the research, but I'm really interested in this idea. Kenyan laws on rape clash with Kenya's own culture, not to mention the stigma that rape has no matter what country you live in. Anyway, this is rambling. Thought patterns typed out and dumped on whoever is still reading this.
