Oh how I hate that money wins elections. And yet I have donated to several causes, including Barack Obama's campaign.
Right now, however, I'm most concerned about Prop. 8 in California, Prop. 2 in Florida and Prop. 102 in Arizona. I know there have been many "marriage" amendments that have passed in other states, so why are these more important? Florida's amendment would ban same-sex unions in addition to marriages. California's proposition would have an immediate impact because right now, it is legal for same-sex couples to marry in that state. If and when Prop. 8 fails, same-sex marriages, like different-sex marriages, can continue. This is huge. I am on pins and needles waiting for the day when anyone can wed the person that he or she loves with a clear conscience in knowing that state laws will continue to protect both of them.
There will always be challenges, as there is still racism decades after the Supreme Court demolished "separate but equal" and tried to level the playing field. At the same time, California is the most populous state in the nation, and if we can make things equal there, maybe, just maybe, opinions will start to change across the country. All people need to do is realize that their fears are just that - fears. They are afraid of something they don't understand, insecure about something they don't know, and too scared to open their hearts to something different than themselves. What it comes down to is that everyone deserves love, respect and understanding. If you can't handle that, I think you have a long way to go in understanding yourself and the people around you.
