My brain rebells

I just had an atypical migraine. There was a period of about two years when I got these every month or two. You know when you look at the sun and then there's this sort of patch of light burned into your retina in various colors that eventually fades away? Well, my symptoms are like that. I notice colored light flashes in one corner of my vision and it spreads to cover about 1/3 to 1/2 of my vision...to the point where I could still pretty much function if I was say, driving (and how do I know this? It totally happened while driving once. I quickly turned around and went back to where I had come from). The light flashes last about 1/2 hour, after which my vision gets blurry (the stage I'm on now, but it's mostly gone) for a bit and then I get a dull headache (not extremely bothersome...Advil could take care of it) for a while. Then it's all gone.

Apparently my dizziness over the past 10 years could also be from atypical migraines. I used to get dizzy all the time, but hardly at all in the past two years, and the last time I had the light flashes was when I was still living in Eugene. What is causing them and why would they return? I went over the foods I ate last night and there was nothing atypical. I did drink a couple beers but I had just as much water. Apparently estrogen can trigger migraines, but went off of estrogen-based birth control about three years ago. It actually seemed to fix the issue because I stopped having light flashes soon after. I figured the estrogen was the culprit. Until today. I'm wondering if that means I'm ok to go back on estrogen or if that means estrogen would just make it worse. Sigh. Clearly, it's not a huge deal, as these migraines are not debilitating, but they do piss me off and make it hard to function for about an hour.
