*nods* I think one of the things about Mal that confuses Jayne the most is that sometimes, in Jayne's world view, there's no profit to what Mal does. He seems to think in terms of exchange-- 'what has so-and-so got that I want?'-- so he's an interesting foil for our jaded hero. ^__^
I can't see a Kaylee who is still sheltered a living at home being that...outgoing? I love the rest of her intro, but that just feels really off.
I didn't see her livng at home as making her sheltered-- she is, after all, young. I guess I see her shyness around guys as an indicator that she likes them. With Bester, it was sort of like a little recreational basketball or something-- I don't think the sex had much importance to it, other than for them both to have fun. I liked seeing the writers do that, and not make Kaylee look 'easy'. She's just an outgoing girl.
Which is interesting when you consider that buying that ship was probably not long after the war ended so maybe he should be really worn down and stuff
Perhaps he was clinging to the possibility that Serenity would be his escape-- that the Alliance couldn't touch him there? It might have taken some time for him to realize that the Alliance wasn't going to let the war be over, really, and that their long arms would reach out to hinder him where ever he went.
