A Tiny Site We Should All Keep An Eye On?
You would never guess I'm in the middle of trying to read an epically long fic, would you? I stop every five seconds to do something else, and then blog about it, because I'm a loser.
BUT, fanlore! I just discovered this site, and is it just me or does it have huge potential? I actually found it because I'm making my way through the Merlin rec list sandalwood_girl linked me, and in the process I found another fic through one of those stories, and then I accidentally closed the window. So instead of going through my excessively long internet history to find it, I googled the name. Apparently this fic is famous, because it has a FANLORE page.
It's like a site that has links to the most epically famous fic for each fandom, fanart, pages on pairings, etc.
Unfortunately, there's no pages for South Park, BTR, or JONAS, which are my three primary fandoms right now. NO SHUT UP ALL THAT HOUSE/WILSON FIC I'VE BEEN SNEAKING DOES NOT COUNT. Anyhow, I feel like this is a fabulous idea. Because, I mean, with South Park the first decent fic I read in fandom were the most popular- I Feel So, Short Stories With Tragic Endings, Life Is Better Under A Totalitarian Regime, etc- and while I don't feel they're the absolute best fic in fandom, I seem to recall finding the was like being, oh hai, people who can spell and don't just write oneshots! It was a happier, more innocent time. But, point being, I only ending up finding those fic after weeks of reading okay oneshots and finding the common theme in their fave authors was these dudes. And through them I began to discover the truly excellent authors.
It would be so much easier coming into a new fandom and automatically being pointed in the new directions- which yes, there are rec lists, but finding the GOOD rec lists is also kind of a process.
So someone should make my fandoms fanlore pages, because I am exceedingly lazy.
EDIT- Also, it sucks googling myself. I adore my name, but I share it with a celebrity and a handful of other people (because my first name is rareish- not insanely so, but uncommon enough, but my last name is like, ridiculously common) which makes it difficult, but said celebrity has also been a guest at a con held at my university, which makes it IMPOSSIBLE. Good for future employers wanting to dig around, bad for googling.
However, I can google my unique pen name plenty, so at least there's that.
