Review Time

I haven't reviewed anything in a while, and this one's going to be short 'cause I have to be up in like, less than six hours.

First off- Libba Bray's Going Bovine. Libba Bray, as you may or may not know, is my all time favorite author. And wow, my computer's fan is making a noise that is not altogether pleasant. It kind of sounds like the computer's going to explode. Anyway. Favorite author.

I liked Going Bovine. I did. Really. Okay, it's a book about a boy dying of mad cow disease, and he predictably dies in the end. Basically the entire book is his whole cracked out dream state during his slow death. When I say cracked out, I mean cracked the fuck out. Like my old nickname is Crackie, and this might have been a little too crackalicious for me. Wow, I just wrote that word, which demonstrates that I'm a)exhausted and b)really freaked out by the noise the fan is making.

While the book kind of read like one long original story you might find on fictionpress, Libba Bray's writing has this quality that I love- a poignancy, if you will. Most books usually have one or two moments that really hit you in the gut and make you go, whoa. Bray's books have eighty. Then, just to offset the beautiful, gorgeous, makes-you-speechless writing, she'll have random moments of hilarity. This is a common characteristic of her writing no matter where you find it; in the AGaTB trilogy, in Going Bovine, or on her lj.

I wasn't completely satisfied with the ending or certain parts of the story- I think The Sweet Far Thing really set my standards up high with all time favorite books- but I did like it. Actually, it kind of reminded me of King Dork, which I think I reviewed a while back.

I think what would have really done it for me is if somehow Cameron really had gone on the whole zany adventure- like maybe his body was at the hospital, but his somehow magically corporeal spirit had escaped with Gonzo and Dulcie and gone through all of it.

Ahem.

I want to write more; maybe I'll come back and edit this sometime so I can add all my real, coherent thoughts.

Second- Love Aaj Kal. I've been wanting to watch it since the summer of course, but had trouble finding subs. My lovely boyfriend brought me chaat and pirated indian movies the other night, because he's terrified of me when I'm mad. Thus, bribes.

Now, I'll pretty much watch anything with Saif Ali Khan in it. I love him. I don't care that he's forty; he falls into the rare, allowable older men category that's also occupied by Aamir Khan, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Hugh Laurie (because I like most of my actors young and in their early twenties).

I kind of thought it was going to be something like Om Shanti Om. It wasn't. Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan have chemistry; better chemistry than Deepika and Shahrukh, I think. But the story line was less satisfying. I disliked the lack of item numbers and background music in a lot of scenes, I disliked the very stupid white girl and general lack of characters, and I disliked the fact that Saif got to play the males in both generations, but some random actress played the seventies girl. Unnecessary. The sets/locations in the seventies ones were nice though; much better than the England/San Francisco ones- the camera filter or something was turning me off for some reason. My favorite part was when they kept filming them looking out of cars and trains and such- and when they kept asking why no matter how many times we say goodbye, we always have to say goodbye one last time before a person leaves. I'm like that- I always want one last kiss/hug/smile.

Really, it was the lack of music that bothered me most. I hate the new theme with Bollywood having a big item number in the credits and virtually no music in the rest of the music. Lacking songs makes it so NOT worth it to watch a three hour movie. Ugh.

I'm hoping the other three will be better- I have Kaminey (which I heard was good), Dil Bole Hadippa (which I heard was not so good), and Ajab Prem something something something (also heard it's good). I hope something's excellent; the last hindi movie I absolutely loved was Bachna Ae Haseeno, and even that had some seens where I was like ehhhh.

Kal Ho Naa Ho, Rang De Basanti, and Jab We Met remain in my top three. Not in that order. Well, Jab We Met's third. I can't figure out whether Kal Ho Naa Ho is better/equal/less than Rang De Basanti.

saif ali khan wears tight pants, bollywood, i'm a little ya, boyfriend, book ratings
