Thats another working week over then.
This week I have worked out all of the ten films I am going to see in the
Sydney Film Festival which started on Wednesday. I bought a ten ticket 'flexipass' which gives me a bit of a discount, however I've had to book all the films in advance. And once I got it down to ten films, I discovered that I couldn't use the pass for one of the venues that I had selected 2 films to see (the Sydney Opera House) so I'm not happy about that. The information was in the paper guide, but I can't see it anywhere on the online site. So I had to try and find two additional films not being shown at the SOH, that didn't clash with the other films I selcted, or hadn't been sold out in the meantime. There is a fee to change your booking online. This whole process was a bit complicated and very time consuming. I've probably spent about 4 solid hours trying to sort out the films I'm seeing; other friends gave up because it was complicated.
I've chosen my films based on quirky, light hearted-ness. Some of my friends want to see films about prison inmates and serial killers!
I took yesterday off work to see my first movie,
Road, Movie. An Indian movie about a young man who goes on a road trip to deliver a truck to a museum. On the way he picks up a small boy, an old man, and a young woman, and the movie is about the journey they all take. The cinematography was lovely - some beautifully colorful shots, particularly near the beginning. Some of the 'road' was not what I was expecting - my limited understanding of India is big cities, and masses of people, so I was surprised to see some of the open almost desert landscape. As a bonus, the movie was a comedy. I give it... 4 and a half stars out of 5 :-)
In the evening I met up with a couple of friends and we went for an Indian meal in a local suburb. Coincidence. I would have loved to take a pic, however my phone battery died...there was masses of varying shades of bright pink material covering all the walls and windows, and lots of indian inspired mirror-y decorations, and some Indian popstar posters on the walls. It was pretty amazing, though I don't know what men would make of it. Its been a rainy old week in Sydney, and we were the only people in the restaurant - and I even made a booking (which was quite funny). Food was delicious, but small servings for the price. The Indian waiter (I suspect he was the manager, as he wasn't a particularly attentive waiter), was wearing jeans and a blue and white checked shirt - so completely different to the last Indian restaurant we went to, where the waiters were all in smart maroon jackets with gold trim (ok, a bit naff, but appropriate).
On the weekend I have two movies -
Au revoir Taipei, and
Boy - a film from New Zealand which is supposed to have lots of 80s references. That was my last minute choice...it had better be good! Au revoir Taipei has been described as "A frothy Asian-pop delight" so Im expecting good things...
Night's tv has been crap. In fact, for the last few weeks on a Friday night, I've been watching a UK reality show, Escape to the country, about helping people to move from the city to the country. The host finds out their potential new house criteria, and looks at 4 houses, and a 'mystery house'- the family then views two properties in person. Its really interesting to see how these houses differ from the Australian houses I am familiar with. Probably to me, the most unusual thing is the utility room which seems to be the room with the laundry, refrigerator, washing machine and drier. As far as I know (Aussies, feel free to correct me), we don't have these rooms. There is often a separate laundry room (if you're lucky), but the fridge is in the kitchen. In fact, it would be most annoying to have to walk to another room to get stuff out of the fridge, specially if you're like me and try to get everything you need in one trip, and sometimes drop things.
I'm curious to see what other people have.
