Welding with Oxy and Acetylene

Jan 18, 2009 22:43

today, i got up early and learned to weld with my dad. the Tech Shop is like a gym for machinists: you become a member, and can use the facilities whenever you want. we got cleared on oxyacetylene welding. the casual references to the possibility of blowing up our half of the building with the tanks, and the large streams of fire i got to control woke me up, as i hadn't had any coffee.

afterwords, we were late to my grandma's 88th birthday brunch with my extended family. this was a continuation of her birthday dinner the night before, and was of similarly epic proportions. although this time the food was held poolside, next to palm trees and under table parasols. it turned out to be necessary to get ice cream on our way back from the brunch, and we carried it back to my grandma's house while the family continued happily catching up with itself.

i took a nap. then i had a gig at a upscale louisiana style restaurant in san jose with the local good musicians. they paid me, i had a huge dinner, and coffee, and watched the bar tenders breath fire again. since i was in the area, i stopped by my favorite coffee shop on the way home. the espresso they used was super-aromatic, and happened to be made perfectly. the freeway opened up under the wheels of my car and i flew home.

this, i will miss.
i will also miss the inauguration because i'm flying back east that day, it turns out.

[oh also. i saw all of the political kids ever at a protest the other day. everyone's still at it, and is way more wholesome than i am. i owe them some wholesomeness in my person, and more compassion in my way, and more love in my life to give them. i want to be able to give them and the world something valuable when we meet. and i seem to have forgotten how.]
