Adam doesn’t understand what went wrong. One minute he and Tommy are having a mind blowing make out session in the janitor’s closest. The next minute Tommy is running out the door, leaving a confused Adam alone in the closet. He can’t catch his breath, let alone comprehend what just happened. Even though Adam is totally lost, it takes him almost a full five seconds to realize that he should be following after Tommy instead of just standing there staring at the closed door. He can’t let Tommy leave like this.

He opens the door and takes off running down the hallway. Adam knows he needs to find Tommy before he leaves so they can figure out what just happened and why the hell Tommy’s running away from him. But most importantly, he needs to know how things went so wrong so fast…

Realizing that it would be stupid for Tommy to even bother going back to class at this point, Adam runs outside hoping to catch him before he reaches his car. Adam maneuvers his way around some stray students walking the halls pushing away the unlucky few who block his path. He’s almost outside when he hears a voice calling his name. Adam turns around and sees Brad strutting over towards him.

“What you doing Adam? Skipping class?” Brad says, a huge shit-eating grin on his face as he stops in front of Adam. Brad is one of Adam’s oldest and closest friends and he loves him, he really does. But Brad likes to play games and Adam really wants to catch Tommy before he leaves.

“Look, I don’t have time for this right now,” Adam says and he heads outside, leaving Brad standing in the hall, staring after him with a confused look on his face.

He runs out into the parking lot, scanning the rows of cars for Tommy. By the time he spots the shock of blond hair it’s too late. He’s already in his car and pulling out of the parking lot. “Shit,” Adam whispers to himself. Tommy ran away. He let Tommy get away from him.

Adam heads over to a tree by the side of the school and sits down underneath it, leaning against the trunk. He needs to think things over, because he is seriously not processing what just happened. He can’t believe it. Tommy had said he loved him. That he was in love with Adam. And what did he do? He rejected Tommy. It wasn’t intentional and he really, really didn’t mean to, but he knew that that wasn’t how Tommy saw it. Everything between them had been fine yesterday, and now it had all been changed so …

The sound of footsteps knocks Adam out of his thoughts. He looks up to see Brad standing above him smirking.

“What’re you doing?” Brad says as he sits down beside Adam in the grass, the look of disgust on his face indicating he knows that his pants will never be the same again. Leaning against Adam, he puts his hand on Adam’s arm and starts to rub up and down. “What’s wrong, baby? What can I do to help?” he asks, tone growing seductive as he moves his hand to Adam’s thigh. He looks up at Adam’s face and begins to stroke Adam’s leg, each time getting a little closer to Adam’s crotch.

“Nothing, Brad,” Adam says as he tries to push Brad’s hand off his thigh, but Brad doesn’t budge. Brad likes to play games, Adam knows that. He just doesn’t like where this one is headed. Not after what he’s been through today.

“Are you sure? Because I’m sure there’s some service I could provide for you,” Brad says with a knowing smirk as he leans in closer to Adam. Their faces are just inches apart now and Adam can feel Brad’s breath on his lips. He doesn’t like where this is going at all. He doesn’t know if Brad is just teasing him or what, but he doesn’t want to find out. Adam is seconds from pulling away when Brad leans in those last few inches and kisses him.

It isn't a bad kiss by any means; Brad's lips are soft from the lip gloss he puts on every day. Not that Brad needs the gloss at all; his lips are soft and warm without it. It's half of why he's so fun to kiss. And being honest, Brad really is a good kisser; a little tongue here, a little biting there, and he always knows what to do to get Adam going. They’d dated for a year and messed around a while after that. But Adam doesn’t want to get back into this messed up relationship with Brad. He’s with Tommy now and he can’t ruin that with a one-time make out session with Brad; no matter how hot it may be. Whether he and Tommy are still together or not, he can’t do that; not while everything is so messed up already. He could play it off as Brad taking advantage of him while he was confused and vulnerable, but he knows that wouldn’t be fair. Not to Tommy and not to Brad.

Adam breaks the kiss and pushes Brad away, glaring at him. “What the fuck, Brad? You can’t just kiss me like that!”

“What?” Brad looks a little incredulous. “Yes I can, bitch. I’m not doing anything wrong,” Brad says as he scoots closer to Adam again, but this time Adam moves farther away from him. “Really? Seriously? This is about him isn’t?”

“What? What are you taking about? Who?” Adam tries to appear innocent even though on the inside he’s freaking out. Brad can’t know. No, he can’t. Adam had worked so hard to keep his new relationship hidden.

“Don’t play coy with me, mister. You know exactly who I’m talking about. I’m talking about Tommy Ratliff. You know, the guy who you used to hate. Well, it looks like that’s changed a lot, hasn’t it?” Brad says, looking triumphant at catching Adam in a lie.

Adam sits there in shock for a couple of seconds. His worst fear is coming true. All his hard work, it’s crumbling right in front of him and he can do nothing to stop it. Adam has just gotten over the shock and opens his mouth to reply, with what he has no idea, when Brad interrupts him.

“Look, I’m not upset. I swear, I’m not. I’m just sad that you didn’t tell me you were with him, that’s all,” Brad says as he scoots closer to Adam again, but this time Adam stays put.

“I’m sorry, Brad. I just… I couldn’t. I couldn’t tell you; I couldn’t tell anyone. I didn’t know how to explain it. How did you find out?” Adam is suddenly curious.

“Well, when you guys resort to making out in bath room stalls, it’s kind of obvious. Maybe you should check and see if anyone’s in the other stalls before you start using one of them for a secret rendezvous,” Brad smirks a little and Adam can’t help but to laugh.

“Oh my god, that was you? Tommy said he heard something but-“

“But you were too busy trying to get off. Yeah, I know.” They both start to laugh. This is what Adam loves so much about his friendship with Brad. One minute everything can be falling apart and the next they can be laughing and having a good time. He just wishes the same were true with Tommy. What he has with Tommy is more complicated and seems to require more work than things ever did with Brad. With Brad, they give each other whatever they can without expectations, but with Tommy comes the need for more, for expectations and more than just whatever’s easy.

Brad, for the second time that day, pulls him from his thoughts. “Adam, are you okay? Seriously, what happened? You look like someone killed your puppy or worse, stole all your eyeliner,” Brad says with a laugh that soon trails off when Adam looks up at him with a solemn look.

“It’s Tommy… He said he loved me and then took off.”

“Wait, what? Tommy told you he loved you?” Brad asks with shock in his voice. When he doesn’t continue, Adam realizes he was waiting for an answer so he nods. “So why are you sitting here sulking then? Shouldn’t you be off with Tommy somewhere?”

“Because I totally froze up. He told me he loved me and I froze. I didn’t say anything back and then he ran off. That’s when I bumped into you in the hall, I was on my way out to catch him so we could talk and figure out what was happening. But by the time I got there it was too late,” Adam puts his face in his hands.

Brad scoots over closer to him and puts his arms around Adam, comforting him. “I’m sorry, baby. I’m really sorry. But you know what you have to do now, right? You have to fight for him.” Adam looks up at Brad with a surprised look.

“Are you telling me to be with Tommy? Really? You hate him.”

“But I love you more than I hate him. And this, I can tell, is tearing you up inside, in here,” Brad says, pointing to Adam’s heart. Adam smiles because Brad really does know him. He knows what he’s feeling and when he’s feeling it. It was nice to have a friend like that.

“Now go get him, tiger,” Brad says as he pushes Adam making him reluctantly stand up. Adam doesn’t really believe he can do anything about Tommy right this second but Brad’s encouragement has given him the confidence to go after Tommy. He has to find him, no matter what. He doesn’t know exactly what he’s feeling about Tommy, if it’s love, lust, or something else, he doesn’t know. But he knows he can’t leave things the way they are. He is going to make things right, if it’s the last thing he does…
