So. Has anyone actually received evidence of their home's destruction in the form of video footage? I'm not referring to those unfortunate ones who actually witnessed such events in person, of course; only those who had previously had nothing but the word of the Vogons to go on. I'm curious as to whether or not I should be expecting something in ( Read more... )

[Gary would filter this message, but he's not much for computers or, in this case, electronic space encyclopedias and their related blog services. Instead he settles for being annoyingly ambiguous.]

Is that what happened, then? Hmm. Well, congrats to them.

[There's a pause and the sound of shuffling fabric, or perhaps he's distractedly repositioning the Guide.]

...Do we have any evidence against what the Vogons are telling us?

We do, actually. But why bother collecting evidence against when they've yet to provide any real evidence for?

Well, I mean, they seem like a fairly meticulous species. Forms for everything and all that. Which means that, if our planets were distroyed, then there would be some definite documentation about it, somewhere. It might take some searching and a few authorization passes, but we could probably find all the evidence we need for or against them by playing along with their, er, species' standards.

That is, unless the crew's done that already and that would be what we have against them. I'd like to know what this is, by the way.

Documentation can be easily faked.

Naturally. But I have a friend who works in the legal system, and from what he's told me about the cases he's defended, the more experienced lawyers and other such businessmen stick to protocol and bend the rules to their liking--you know, "losing the case file," "Oh I must have left that form in my other briefcase," that sort of thing. But only the stupid ones legitimately fake documentation. It's a mentality, I think.

It's far more stupid for these Vogons to simply refuse to show us documentation than it would be for them to show us faked papers. Either way, there are going to be people who don't believe them, but that number would likely be reduced with every bit of evidence that they provide.

In your friend's world, there are probably countless ways that faked paperwork can be exposed. But how could we tell for sure whether anything they showed us was real or not?

Maybe they have a reason for not showing us. I can believe in secondary motives.

That being said, you're right--we can't. And there's no better way I can think of to get some hard evidence other than getting an outside opinion. Which means, getting off this ship. Which means, getting enough credits to hop a taxi to Alpha Centauri. Or something like that.

By the way, still hoping to see that wonderful evidence you have against the Vogons. Any day now.

I'm still waiting to see that wonderful evidence you have for them. As for evidence against-- which I still don't believe should be necessary, given that we have absolutely nothing to go on but their word-- you'd have to ask those who had returned to their intact worlds.

When did I say I had any evidence to back them up?

Exactly.

Alright, look. I've been here for less than a week. If I knew what the hell was going on then I wouldn't be asking around for information--but not only am I completely out of the loop, but it's also not my job to spout out opinions. My job is to collect them.

Basically, don't listen to anything that comes out of my mouth, okay? You have the floor here.

And yet you were giving your opinions all the same, so don't get snippy when they're refuted.

It's also my job to play devil's advocate. Gets people to think.

I've already thought quite a lot about this, but I'm afraid nothing is going to convince me that I should believe something as monumental as this without good reason.

I'm not asking you to. As a matter of fact I think I'll ask you something a little less controversial.

What's your name?
