I've never heard of anything called heartless before, not as a name. What are they like?

What they look like sort of changes. But all of them steal people's hearts. Someone explained it to me a while back, but I didn't really get it then.

That sounds more like a specific type of monster. The usual ones just kill people and maybe eat them.
