[[OOC: Backdated at least a week, well before the magnetism event. I am so sorry to anyone who's been waiting for this -- there was a large project at work and no one told me I was going to be working like a dog and pulling all-nighters for two weeks straight. Trust me, I've been dying to get this up.]]
[Open scene: Classroom of the Magic Guild.]
[For those who have never stepped inside the Guildhouse -- that is, most people aboard the S.S. Thor -- you might it surprising that the rooms look something closer to those of a temple or church than a school. Evidently, the designer decided squares are for squares, and instead shaped classrooms inside the guild like an octagram with its points cut off, resulting in
a scalloped circle shape. The room is lit by lanterns fixed to the walls, powered purely by enchantment, which radiate with a bright amber light. The floors are covered in a pattern of small, blue stone tiles, and the walls have magic runes sculpted into the plasterwork. Apprentices are seated two to a table, and the tables are lined up in two rows with a path down the center.]
[Normally, this small class of apprentices would be taught by one of the Guild's teachers for the month, Patchouli Knowledge or Vivi Orunitia. However, it was the request of the Guild's Premier, Lemina Ausa, that she be allowed to commandeer the classroom for a portion of today's class.]
[Correction: that was the request of Deputy Guildmistress Lemina Ausa. She's been quite insistent on the title ever since the Guild has opened and needed a leader. And today she's dressed for the part, wearing a far more formal robe than typical: one in silks of black and red, embroidered in white and gold, with a mantle and cape in addition to the drawn hood.]
[She walks up the center aisle of the classroom to the desk at the front. When she reaches it, she turns around, lowering her hood to give her an unobstructed view of the class.]
[At first, her expression is cold, displeased. It's not the selection of apprentices who signed up for classes this month. It's the number. Her expectations, unrealistic as always, were to see every seat in this room filled.]
[Then she sighs, with a tone of "whachugonnado", and her cold expression immediately with a bright, warm grin.]
The first apprentices of the New Magic Guild of Vane! It is an unspeakable pleasure to see you here today, and to stand before you as your Deputy Guildmistress! [See? I told you she was keen on the new title.] How have your first lessons been? Have any of you mastered your first fireballs yet?
[She giggles, wondering if any of them caught the joke. It's doubtful these novices would be able to cast any fire spells yet, even if their teachers decided to follow an accelerated program, one that skimmed the deep studies of magic circles and arcane languages and jumped straight into the actual act of casting. If magic were easy, everyone would do it, and they wouldn't need thick books on spellcasting!]
[On the other hand, she keeps her eyes peeled for the student response, in case there's a prodigy or somewhat more experience caster in the class.]
Keep at it, though. I sense some great potential from you! [But she doesn't clarify whether she meant "some of you" or "all of you"...] It may be mega-challenging at first, but if you give it time and effort, and a little bit of heart...
[She pauses, raising her hands. The lights in the room extinguish. If anyone can see in the pitch darkness, they would see the girl focusing intently. The whispers of arcane language pass her lips.]
Luminare!
[And suddenly, an orb of pure white light winks into existence, hovering between her hands. Strangely, even though it's radiant enough to light up the whole room, it's not painful to look at directly.]
Charte!
[The orb disintegrates into a flurry of particles, as if they had been scattered by a strong breeze. But instead of floating around at random, they cover the walls and ceiling in an intricate pattern, like the petals of a giant flower blooming from the center.]
... the path will be illuminated before you! [Okay, that was cheesy and trite. But give her a break. Look how large that grin is on Lemina's face! She loves showing off, and for the first time, she has a captive audience.]
[She claps her hands.] But I digress. I was quite serious when I had asked how your studies are coming. Have you learned any spells yet? ... well enough that you think you could cast them for an audience?
I ask because... there will be an Open House for this new Magic Guild near the end of the month, and your attendance is mandatory~! Bringing a guest counts as extra credit. And while I don't mind showing everyone what mega-awesome powers could be theirs with years and years of study here at the Guild, I think it would be fantastic for you to demonstrate what you've already learned!
No pressure or anything, though. If you can't even seem to manage a simple Light spell, then... [Her grin turns devious.] ... you should still come, so you can get a taste of what tapping into real magic power feels like. [And she doesn't elaborate on that further. Ooh. Mysterious.]
Now! Come on, let's see what you can do! This is your chance to get private tutoring from the Guildmistress herself~! ♥
[[OOC: Open House log will be up shortly, I just need a breather. That will be... slightly less backdated.]]
