[The Guide flickers on to see Midii sitting in the back of a Primary School classroom.  As her teacher continues to prattle on about some basic-level mathematical problems, she appears the model student: quiet, focused, and inputting notes from the lesson into her handheld device.]

Lackadaisical today?

Tsk, tsk...education is the foundation of a better society.

Allegedly.

[Oh, great. She recognized that voice. Not the person she wanted to hear from right then.]

I already learned all this stuff back home. Placing me in this class was a mistake.

There's always something new to learn. Might see something you didn't see at first glance. Don't assume any classroom has nothing new to offer. It's math, isn't it? Why don't you try listening? After all, things in your life haven't exactly been breaking even, have they?

She's teaching us how to multiply single-digit numbers. I highly doubt there's going to be some grand revelation in such a simple lesson.

[Grits her teeth at the "breaking even" comment]

...and for the record, I'm perfectly happy with my life as it is right now.

[Okay, maybe not "perfectly", but she's not going to go into detail with her]

There's beauty in simplicity. Besides, that makes it easier to crush the competition and lead the pack, doesn't it? You lack aspiration.

[really, her voice is just dripping with gleeful spite]

Your lying needs work. Has Quatre been rubbing off on you?

In other subjects, maybe. And I don't want to either crush competition or lead a pack.

[a.k.a. -- "I'm not like you."]

...what's that supposed to mean?

Where's your ambition?

[faint laughter]

Quod erat demonstrandum. Part of your math, right?

Why do I need it?

[A slightly confused look]

Not this particular lesson, but I've heard that phrase before.

To live and die in a magnificent manner.

Ah Latin. It's pretty but the words tend to be simple common sense.

I have no interest in doing the latter any time soon. I just want to live my life.

It depends on what you're referring to, exactly. And what does any of this have to do with Quatre?

Why live sub par?

Hm... In some respects, he's an open book just asking for its pages to be ripped out. In others, he's annoyingly closed. The only constant is his policy on truth-telling. You, however, seem to like to lie. You're just not very good at it.

Who said it was sub par?

...I don't lie to him. In fact, I rarely lie at all anymore.

Of course. You're perfectly happy. That's no lie.

Let me rephrase.

I rarely lie to my friends.

You don't move your pawns? That doesn't make for a very good game.

They're not pawns. They're important people in my life, and I have no intentions of manipulating any of them.
