I'm concerned about the Guide's explanation of this world's God... Surely a deity wouldn't willingly cause harm and strife to their worshipers, would they?

[There's a small pause as the water goddess contemplates.]I wonder if one can meet this God, and speak with them. The inhabitants of this planet must not enjoy suffering the tribulations the ( Read more... )

Why wouldn't they? They're a god. They can do whatever they want.

But a god should hold some responsibility over keeping their worshipers happy, shouldn't they?

Not necessarily. Who says that all gods have to be benevolent?

I see no benefit in being malevolent to my own believers. It bothers me to see this god be so cruel to the inhabitants of this world.

But there isn't really a benefit to being nice, either.

What makes you say that?

If you're god of the world, then you get to decide the rules. That means there isn't really a moral issue at hand of being right or wrong. So you might as well just do whatever you want, and I'm sure some gods think it's fun to mess with all of the little people.

That's true, but in some worlds gods have a responsibility to take care of their people. Without that responsibility, those gods would just make their people miserable and then they would lose faith.

[And in her world, Faith is what empowers a god.]

Then this world's god doesn't have that responsibility.

I just find that to be quite irresponsible.

It isn't irresponsible if it isn't their responsibility.

How can taking care of and maintaining the well-being of one's followers not be a god's responsibility?

Because some gods just want to be all-powerful and mess with their followers, like this one. It's the god's choice to do what they want with their power, isn't it? There's no rule of the universe that says you have to be a good god when you're given almighty power.

I suppose you are right... It just bothers me. I could never imagine myself or Mother or any of my siblings doing such things to our believers.

Are you really a god? As in, if you really wanted to, you could be a terrible force like this planet's god and wreak havoc on your people's lives?

Yes, I am. I am the goddess of Water in my world. My family's Brush Techniques and skills are enough to cause great harm to Nipon if we are not careful, though I could not imagine wanting to cause harm to my people.
