He's reading it intently and every once in a while looks up at his surroundings. After a while of this he finally speaks up, but it's not to the camera, he seems to be unaware of it.]

[He jumps dropping the book and then looks around him until he finds the guide. When he gets it in his hands he nods.]

It says a focus is a good thing to start with.

Yes. It says a starting magician may find it easier if they have an object they can use to help focus. Usually a magical item like a pendant, ring, or staff.
