It's a figure of speech. You aren't actually breaking anything. Actually, I thought that doing something like this would mess with reality more.

But it sounds like the story you're reading is different from your own life, so maybe that has an effect on things.

Then maybe you aren't from this particular story. Rapunzel is one of those fairy tales that probably has a million different variations! Just like Sleeping Beauty, or Cinderella.
