A test of character. One has to be smart enough to realize one is being tested and know that the weapon can't possibly be functional. After all, how else can the tester declare a verdict? Certainly not if they cease to live.

[you know how like when you're watching a trivia game show or something and they ask a really obvious question, so you start yelling the answer at the TV as if it'll help the guy playing the game show thing to answer but he gets it wrong anyway and then you're all "UUUUGH I HAD THE RIGHT ANSWER I SHOULD BE ON THIS SHOW"]

Never had to deal with anything like it personally, but I did attend a military academy for a while. When you're around enlisted officers and the like long enough, you see some pretty interesting things.
