[When the video feed starts, the screen shows a man looking down at his guide. He appears to be adjusting his dark sunglasses while weighing his options concerning what to say. When he speaks, it's in a controlled voice; if he was angry or cautious or confused earlier, there are no traces of it now.]

Is this how all newcomers are greeted in space ( Read more... )

I suppose asking about criminal history would be pointless, since I doubt they would get any honest answers and there's no way to verify it.

Actually I'm not sure they care about honest answers for any of that paperwork.

Perhaps. Yet they ask for history nonetheless.

If the paperwork is just pomp and circumstance, they could have chosen a more interesting activity.

For the Vogons, that is an interesting activity. It almost seems to be a religion with them.

[A faint grin at that] Then they must have some very dull gods, indeed.

It's not a service I'd ever want to attend. [He gives a small answering smile.]

Still, dealing with the Vogons and their love of paperwork is an unfortunate fact of life around here.

Is it? Spoken like someone well-versed in unfortunate facts. What else should I know?

Well, let's see. The Guide doesn't always function correctly. Whatever your former profession was, don't count on doing that here. You'll be sharing a common room with up to five other people, but you get your own bedroom. It's actually a lot like being back in university.

I've been told of the rooming arrangements. 3-8, I believe.

What 'profession' are we expected to take, then?

They post job listings ever month, and they're both varied and random. You can probably find this month's on your Guide if you search.

Or you can try and find employment on your own. Just keep in mind that if it's something requiring qualifications, they probably won't take your word for it and all your records are gone.

Working to both my advantage and disadvantage at once. How troublesome.

Nonetheless, if there are jobs that require the use of any science labs on this ship, I'll find myself at home soon enough.

There are labs on board. You're a scientist?

Any particular speciality?

[Oh sure, if it's an elite squad of science commandos maybe.]

[;kasfak YES THAT IS WESKER IN A NUTSHELL. An elite science commando.]

I developed various [what's a good word?] substances for different pharmaceutical companies. Why? Are you a man of science yourself?

Yes, actually. I'm a doctor.

My name's John Watson.

[John Watson? And you're British, too. Well, how novel.]

Isn't that fitting.
