[Her heart is beating in eager anticipation as she takes her place, the heavy chains in her hands rattling. She spares a fleeting glance out into the audience, the golden gilt around the balconies reflecting a soft glow yet the faces of the spectators dark. The sound of the orchestra swells, the lines fall from her lips, then she is singing.

She is performing the most bitter-sweet role of her life: Leonore, of the opera 'Fidelio'.

Her character Leonore, disguised as a prison guard named "Fidelio", will save her husband Florestan from death in a political prison. Every song is a challenge for her voice, stretching it to painful heights, but it is all worth it for this magnificent, climatic part.]
