So yesterday I was doing jury service for around 6 hours, but I wasn't chosen. I came very near to being selected for a rape trial, though. I was actually really surprised at how the whole thing worked.
We were told that we'd all be brought before the judge, who would ask us personal questions and decide if we were right for the case. What I wasn't expecting, however, was for the actual alleged rapist, his lawyers, the accusers, and her lawyers to be present. The alleged rapist looked very mean. He looked like every asshole that ever hit one of my cousins. He didn't speak english and had a translator. He stared at me for a few moments and it made my heart jump.
I felt very, very anxious about the entire thing. They sequestered the other jurors before calling us in one by one for detailed questioning. One lady leaned over and said, "Well, he looks guilty to me!" Each juror had to state his or her name for the record, which I really didn't want to do. I didn't want the rapist to know my name! But they never got to me, as they selected the first 5 jurors they questioned and let the rest of us go. And I made $9!
Today I woke up at 8AM just like I do every morning, just in case the temp. agency calls me. Then I pathetically troll for jobs and apply for at least 5, all of which will probably lead to nothing.
In other news, I bought a kettlebell. At least I can fill my day with weightlifting.
