Rabbit Hole Day, A trip to Erosia

Jan 27, 2005 14:12

“Treason! Hang them from the highest!
They are sons of thieves and liars
They’ll wish they never held a pen
We’ll lock them up, and then and then.”

General Hammer shouts as he storms out of the Stateroom in the Palace of Erosia. He is not having a good day and the war is not going well. Funds are dwindling and the two people whose words he twisted until the King threw them in prison have escaped.

The Rev Smith head of the Holy Church of Erosia has followed Hammer out of the room and is trying to calm him down. She approaches him gently putting her hand on his shoulder.

“Caution, caution. You are the Hastiest
Of creatures. This is the traitors doing
We should expose the atheists,
Fresh and novel, for what are
Corruptian dogs, pure and simple.”

Her words seem lost on him, she can see the rage still building in him as he turns to stare at her. He erupts with yet more rage in another tirade.

“They would be dead had they not fled
Across the Corruptian border
Quite why they would lauder
Such elements, is anyone’s guess
No wonder they are such a mess”

He storms past her fist clenched thinking of new and unpleasant ways to inflict pain on the bribed guards that helped Fresh and Novel escape and flee across the border. Rev Smith only to aware of the bloodlust rising in the general try a new approach.

“They are not as weak as you might think
They have numbers on their side
And rumours of their preparation
Circulate, far and wide
It would be foolish not to listen
Before it is to late
Offer concessions -negotiate”

Hammer spin on heels and fixes Rev smith with stare so full of hate it covers her like a shadow.
Rev Smith continues though a little unsure.

“Be the dove and not the snake
The only tree that does not bend
It is surely bound to break”

Hammer explodes in a fury of words, he can hardly believe what this woman is saying to him.

“NEGOTIATE?
I should rather ask an intestinal worm
If out of my gut he’d kindly squirm
Without even as much as a fight
It simply would not be very right
So it is with these parasites
Out of mind and out of sight!”

Let her chew on that, negotiate where is the victory in that. It has been a long war, very one sided in Erosia’s favour. Fighting peasants is one thing, it’s the Curruptian gorillas that have lengthened this war, they seem to think they can take this land from the King, and put some puppet in his place. He thinks those strings lead to Fresh and Novel
Rev Smith does what she always does when flustered and turns back to religion; aware of her friend’s angush she hides behind God. For friends they are, ten years they have worked side by side advising both the previous ruler and the new King on matters of State, Religion and Military.

“I had such thoughts before
To resist such things for evermore
Now God has given me eyes to see
I tend to see things differently
Our only hope for stability
Lies in control of democracy
Otherwise out we shall go
Along with the staus quo”

He turns to face her again, so she wants to play the God card does she. He is well aware that this works with the people even some Rulers feared the almighty he knows the real power lies with those that control the Faith and the military.

“What of religion? Can you not pacify
These desires? Cool these outrageous demands?
Point to the true authority in sky
Can’t you lie? Some terrible divine retribution
A vengeful deity’s final solution?”

She new he would be like this how to do I get out of this with out losing face, how does he always twist it to get the upper hand. It’s a battlefield to him manoeuvre and counter manoeuvre, attack faint and flank.

“I could some story fabricate
It would only seal our fate
The Lord, He works in ways mysterious
I fear if we demanded, He should not hear us
And truly would I look a fool
No more authority with which to rule
You have more options now than I
You have more bargaining chips to fry”

What is she talking about, what can he do about it, they are not in the Stateroom now. He has power there what power can he have over these radicals now they have fled.

“What Chips? What Bargaining?” he blurts out in frustration.

Does she have to spell it out to him, does he always just think with his weapon.

“Its quite simple - even the stiffest of lips
Quivers with some form of temptation
We are mortal; we have wants and needs
For ideals, substitute gratifacation
Buy them off, give them cars and suits
Let them pose as the people’s voice
Then don’t give them any choice”

She looks at hammer and its as if the preverbal light bulb has just illuminated above his head. Of course he thinks bribery everyone has there price I really must stop thinking with my gun.

“Yes…. YES… Wait until the King hears
About the brilliance of this plan
You truly are above mortal man!
I will make the necessary overtures
I will not swear, rage or curse
But not be overfriendly…
I will offer peace dialogue
As the swooping bat to ignorant frog
Then on there heads I will shower
Titles, devoid of any real power
Into their ranks I’ll put a splinter
How their summer turns to winter”

He turns and walks back towards the Stateroom cackling to himself, Rev Smith follows him out as well smiling to herself.

I hope you all enjoyed that the words are taken from the play I am doing Erosia written and copyright Phil Harris. I have just turned the thought and motivation that the two characters Church and State (played by me) are feeling into words. It’s a small insight into the other world I have been living in these last few months.
